Auto sales in July hit levels not seen since 2006, thanks to an improving economy, increasing home values, low interest rates and a demand for pickup trucks.
Pickup trucks add to a third or fourth of overall sales at each of the Big 3 automakers.
Pickup sales at GM rose 44 percent in July. Ford F-Series pickup sales were up 23 percent and Chrysler's Ram pickup sales increased 31 percent for the month. These three companies make up more than 90 percent of all pickup sales in the U.S.
Overall sales for automakers were in the double-digit range, led by Toyota’s 17 percent sales increase. Volkswagen was the only automaker to report a sales decrease with a drop of 3.3 percent.
