“Disney is first and foremost the best this summer with ‘Iron Man’ and ‘Monsters University,’ ” according to Phil Contrino chief analyst of BoxOffice.com. So far, “Iron Man 3” has grossed $1.2 billion worldwide, with $805 million of that from overseas sales. According to BoxOffice.com estimates, Disney spent about $275 million on production, marketing and advertising.“Monsters University” is another big hit for Disney grossing $533 million so far, while spending an estimated $275 million on the budget, said BoxOffice.com.

And of course, no movie is just a movie for Disney. It’s usually expected to generate a lot of merchandising behind it, but it doesn’t always work out that way. Disney hoped “The Lone Ranger” would become a new franchise, but instead, it put a dent in profits, said Contrino. It grossed $147.7 million, after spending approximately $290 million on production, marketing and advertising, according to BoxOffice.com.

BoxOffice.com says Universal’s “Fast & Furious 6” is approaching the $800 million mark, and that’s before its release in China this weekend. The previous installment of the “Fast & Furious” franchise made $630 million in total.

By the way, if a movie studio wants to get into the “Avatar” or “Iron Man” club, or what some might call the “$1 Billion Club,” it needs to deliver overseas.

A movie needs to make at least $600 million internationally, while the biggest hits in North America usually bring in around $400 million, according to Contrino.

“Russia, Brazil, Japan and the U.K. are hungry for more movies,” said Contrino, “You have to build a following there.”

According to Yahoo there is a clear line in the movie searches done by men versus those by women. The male population dominates the searches for action films. More than 60 percent of searches for “Man of Steel,” “Iron Man 3,” “World War Z” and “Star Trek” were done by men.

Sixty-percent of searches for “Despicable Me 2,” “Monsters University” and “The Great Gatsby” were done by women.
