These 9 Brands All Have Better Reputations Than Apple Right Now

    Provided by Business Insider:

Market research firm YouGov BrandIndex has released its survey of the top brands of 2011, and found for the second straight year that Subway is the most beloved brand among consumers.

You just can't beat cheap sandwiches, it seems.

The survey is based on a continuous sampling of 2.5 million people online, within YouGov's database that nationally represents U.S. adults.

The survey produces a "Buzz score," based on consumers' response to questions such as, "If you've heard anything about the brand in the last two weeks, through advertising, news or word of mouth, was it positive or negative?"

The results are an amalgamation of those results taken from the entire period of 2011, and thus represent the strength of these brands based on consumer sentiment and "buzz" over the period.

Here are the 10 strongest brands in the U.S. right now, starting with the best:

    #1 Subway

YouGov says: "Subway is the only dining brand to crack the BrandIndex Buzz Ranking Top 10. The sandwich giant ranks number one in our overall Buzz list for the second consecutive year."

    #2 Amazon

"The launch of the Kindle Fire and an increase in marketing spend solidified Amazon's number two position," YouGov says.

    #3 History Channel

This is History's third consecutive appearance in the top five brands of the year. It's not just World War II stuff any more: The channel added reality shows such as Pawn Stars and speculative documentaries about aliens.

    #4 Google

Google edged up one spot from last year's survey due in part, perhaps, to its launch of Google+, its social networking site.

    #5 Cheerios
General Mills introduced 'Cinnamon Burst Cheerios' last year, but the cereal is a perennial best brand in this survey.

    #6 Lowe's

Lowe's buzz declined a little at the very end of 2011 due to a controversy over its refusal to sponsor the TLC reality show All-American Muslim.

    #7 Ford

Ford is the top auto brand in the survey and its 2011 sales bounced back.

    #8 Discovery Channel

Shark Week -- still getting the job done for Discovery. This is the third consecutive year for the channel in the YouGov Top 10.

    #9 Target

Target hurt itself in September when its launch of a Missoni collection crashed its web site. But people like the cheap and trendy retailer so much it kept its place in the top 10.

    #10 Apple

Apple hasn't been in the top 10 for the last three years, but new iPad and iPhone models -- plus the death of Steve Jobs -- appear to have grown consumers' affection for the brand.

How about ACME? The stuff Wiley Coyote gets always works great.

I thought you meant the supermarket. I was going to say, Acme sucks.
      • Duster 4 months ago
Wiley always seemed to pull something from his hat. And ACME was the source!!

Amazons "marketing spending" have nothing to do with their reputation, nice try. Their service is top notch for the most part and consistent. That's why their reputation is near the top, not because of marketing dollars spent. Quit being so lazy.

Agreed. Amazon has made my life so much easier; they're truly a company that hasn't yet let me down.
      • Sara 4 months ago
I bought a chunk of stock in them because they're so awesome!

The title of the survey is "top brands in 2011". That was last yr and the new data you speak of is from today (2012).

I noticed Comcast, Verizon, ATT did not make this list. Oh yeah, they are all horrible, that's why.
      • Mike 4 months ago
        Comcast is a major RIP-OFF !

Verizon has immaculate reception but the Customer Service is down right garbage and they treat their customers like crap!

What History Channel?? With shows like "Pawn Stars", "Ax Men", "Top Shot", "Swamp People" "American Pickers" "Ice Road Truckers", etc. etc. etc. history has clearly taken a back seat on this network. These and other shows might very well be entertaining and occasionally touch on matters of historical interest, but they are essentially "reality" shows.

Kinda how MTV hasn't had music on in the last 15 years

They are definitely more interesting than anything Snooki or the Kardashians have to offer.
      • J 4 months ago
That's why I'm glad they made History 2, or History International, or whatever it's called. But it still shows good non-reality shows.

So the History Channel abandons history and becomes a "top brand". God Bless America.

There are several ways to pick this reporting and/or research apart. Most importantly, "reputation" and "buzz" are two different things. To the best of my knowledge, there is no universally approved, industry-sanctioned definition of "buzz." Generally, it is considered to be the total number of messages about a brand from all sources. "Reputation" is the market's opinion about the brand. Because some respondent (we don't know how the sample is balanced beyond geography) HEARS a positive message about a brand doesn't mean he or she BELIEVES the message.

To be fair, it appears the word "reputation" was introduced by Jim Edwards in the Business Insider article, rather than by YouGov. Nevertheless, reckless reporting undermines the integrity of the research.

I would like to see those super secret 2011 "" buzz declination""charts as they pertain to Lowe's and the muslim incident.....show them to us or it never happened.

Subway is convenient - but there is nothing like a sandwich made in a mom and pop's deli. I'm not Jewish, but I when I can, I head to a Jewish deli - love their bread and their meat not to mention those kosher pickles. Pastrami on a fresh bagel - to die for.

I use Amazon so much that's it's become the automatic place for me to check before I go anywhere else - even for buying whole-bean coffee.

History channel owns enough channels..including Nat Geo..etc...but this reliance on pawn shop and pickers..is getting old... as is the phony reality of mixing up contrived drama..like the O C biker ...I'd say to them at History ...It's contents Dummy! ..not cooked up squabbles.
    • D3  •  Troy, Michigan  •  4 months ago
Since the history channel changed to crap shows they lost people like me, historians. I am hoping that some one comes up with a channel actually devoted to History, not just in name only. History used to be my default channel, now I never watch it.

I frequent Subway. It is not that they are all that good, it is merely that everyone else is all that bad.

The Government asked Google to help them track and persecute child molesters, because they use the internet to prey on victims. Google declined any assistance! the Chinese communist government asked Google to remove words like "democracy", "freedom", any kind of religious words, any articles and videos about Tiananmen square protests and many others, so that the people in China would not get any search results ... and Google agreed!! Google for me has NO reputation!!!

George: Glad to see Home Depot got your business, but they have started selling a lot more chinese made crap that breaks almost immediately when you use it, and winds up in American landfills. If you have a "inside connection" to their buyers, tell them to stop buying the chinese and other "sweatshop" made products that are sold in their stores.

LEGO just say the name and you know what it is.

Ford -- they have the Mustang and the F-150, which are two fantasy vehicles that are still in the reach of many of us. Good quality cars, iconic name and still made in America, for the most part. What is not to like?

RE the HIstory Channel; "It's not just World War II stuff any more: The channel added reality shows such as Pawn Stars and speculative documentaries about aliens." Oh, so they're leaving out history on the History Channel and putting in reality shows and THIS has improved their rep? Pathetic!!
