The Coming Collapse: “We Can Buy Time, But We Can’t Change the Outcome”

Follow The Daily Ticker on Facebook here!

The Ayn Rand Institute held its annual "Atlas Shrugged Revolution" dinner Thursday night in New York City.

In attendance were a number of financial luminaries and hedge fund managers, including Peter Schiff of EuroPacific Capital, John Tamny of RealClearMarkets, Dmitry Balyasny of Balyasny Asset Management and Scott Schweighauser of Aurora Investment Management.

The setting was the tony St. Regis Hotel on Fifth Avenue but there was nothing pleasant about the primary message coming from both the speakers and those in attendance: Western civilization is heading for hell and a hand basket, just like Rand predicted in her seminal novel.

In the accompanying video, ARI president Yaron Brook tells Henry why Rand's devotees believe the global economy is "heading for collapse."

In a nutshell, Brook believes politicians and policymakers have "no solutions" for the problems facing the globe.

"The fundamental problem," Brook says, is with the philosophical belief our society has that governments can solve problems and more rules and regulations are the answer to our economic ailments.

Barring "real structural change" to our economic underpinnings toward self-reliance and true laissez-faire capitalism, "we can buy time, but we can't change the outcome," Brook says.

And what will that outcome be? A repeat of the Great Depression in the 'best'-case scenario, he says. And the worse-case? A repeat of the fall of the Roman Empire.

"I don't expect that, I think we'll rebound," Brook says. "But we have to remember that…civilizations in human history have declined, they've disappeared."

We no longer have a government that is by the people and for the people, when we have no food to eat and no jobs, then we will overturn the government and start over....
      • D. 8 months ago
And do the government para sites get to walk away without being held accountable for what they've done to us ??? We need to cage them in their own prisons.
      • Matt S 8 months ago
Arguable, we never really did have a government by the people and for the people. It was always really dominated by those that had wealth. In fact the Declaration of Independence was really about the free, white, male landowner. We are now paying for very bad policies and poverty is on the rise. If we continue down this course, it won't take long for upheaval to strike.

@Matt S -". In fact the Declaration of Independence was really about the free, white, male landowner. "Oh horsesh!t! The first freakin slave was a white guy and his master was black.. There were blacks that got conveniently left out of history in the Revolutionary War and was taught to us all in school that whites dominated and made all black people slaves.. that was all #$%$ lies and distorted truths.. Slavery has never left. The real slave owners are the ones that want to keep you dependent on big government and them running things. Ever notice that the same people keep getting elected and poor people never seem to get out of that "poor hole" they're in?? True capitalism got thrown out the window when we let government get too big and gave the ability to create money to a private bank, namely the Federal Reserve, and took that away from Congress. We haven't had true capitalism ever since the government started bailing out those too big to fail vampire corporations that suck the life right out of the economy. We're all slaves to the system..

Washington governs by crises .........time to take our torches to Washington......
      • D. 8 months ago
Washington creates the crisis.... every time. They don't have social security to allow us to retire at age 65 because the governmental criminals used our money to fire missles in the middle east just to pretend they are important and pretend to be world leaders.

there's no such thing as "forever" in this universe, the only constant is "change".

There are only two things that are endless, the universe and stupidity. And I'm not sure about the universe.

Along this line, the US government should also adopt the laissez-faire strategy in handling foreign affairs. We are being too nosy.

In history each civilization rise then fall in time. The main questions are when and in our case how hard.
As you can see the U.S.A. is in the process of falling from the number 1 nation in the world to something less. Please compare the USA to the Roman Empire during its downfall over centuries ours will take decades if we are lucky.
      • skier99 8 months ago
No, please do not compare the USA to Rome. What a waste of time.

Also, junk Ayn Rand and read Jared Diamond: Guns, Germs and Steel if you want an intelligent and modern analysis of civilizational dynamics.

No one can offer you a life of ease and mental tranquility without extreme hard work and the ability and desire to to excel and take frightening risks. Its the lie that you can lay back in life and excel that is ruining our economy, educational system, and entitlement programs.

All these problems could be fix by installing a tariff on imports to replace all income tax. The combination of loss of manufacturing jobs and cheap immigrant labor has caused the loss of the US labor machine.

Middle class people buy stuff, they don't hoard money.

The US has the most lucrative buyers market in the world. Giving it away is stupid.

Todays crisis started a long time ago just before the days of Reagan. The government /business etc have been applying "bandaids" over and over adnauseum. The "bandaids" are no longer sticking and giving us all the illusion that all is well. There are many solutions. Reforming insurance and not allowing the ridiculous profits would be a nice start. I am personally looking outside of this country for at least part-time retirement. We need politicians that have big enough cajones to stand up to the health ins. /oil big corp. etc.

Congress doesn't know how to manage even $1 of it's income.
Force congress to stop overdrawing their checking account every day.
Limit congressional spending to 94% of their income (which is about $5Bill. a day).
That would enable them to use 3% to pay down the debt and 3% to cut taxes and build a reserve fund for emergencies. This would also eliminate the deficit.
Do this every year until the debt is gone. This will save $1 Billion a day that congress is wasting on interest on the debt.
America needs a debt target of zero.

The demographic wave of the Baby Boomer retirement will overwhelm the entitlement system, period. Their fica tax payments were spent and my generation is too small to pay the bill. Buckle up for a wild ride...

Just as making bad decisions slowly put us in this dismal shape we find ourselves in making good decisions can slowly put us back in the right direction. Our first step is to find a way to replace the leaders that prefer the wrong track with those strong enough to opt for the right track. Our process of electing officials is rigged against us being able to elect the best candidate by giving Iowa and New Hampshire the power to eliminate the better candidates in favor of the seemingly populist candidate. Here is where it is rigged as the candidate willing to please everyone is incapable of making right track decisions going against the populists. We need 4 rotating regional primaries letting everyone vote for every candidate in order to have any chance of saving ourselves.

All of the problems this "Leading Thinker" discusses are related to regulating corporations and taxing the rich. "Real structural change" is changing the approach of government...eliminate government and let people take responsibility for themselves. He suggest the amazing idea that everyone should try to have a job and not ask for help unless you really need it. Your kid should not ask government for a Pell Grant and there should be no federally subsidized student loans. Grandma should not get Social Security or Medicare, she should take care of herself. If she REALLY needs help, maybe a charity can kick in a bit. If that's not enough, well, Grandma should have saved more for her retirement.

"fundamental" problem, IMHO, is that self-government does not scale.

We just have to look at "primitive" societies that are still in existence today ( tribal societies that live off the land), they seem to govern themselves OK, with a spat now and then settled by elders or with a good bout of fisticuffs. Their wants are few, they eat right and work for everything.

And then, look at us ! Government does not scale, PERIOD. At least, govt that is not transparent. Until and unless all actions taken by govt bureaucrats at the highest level are subject to scrutiny, govt is just a veil of secrecy under which they carry on nefarious activities, desecrating the trust of the people. This does not happen in a primitive society- they are just too transparent.

The Roman Empire did not fall in one piece. Yes there was the sack of Rome in 400 something, but the actual fall was a lengthy decay process.
