Deepak Chopra: Money Can’t Buy Happiness

Follow The Daily Ticker on Facebook here!

Money can't buy happiness. Happiness, however, can buy you a longer life. A new study published in the National Academy of Sciences found older people who are happy have a 35% lower risk of dying over a five-year period than unhappy people.

But, how does one attain happiness? That was the topic when noted author and lecturer on spiritual matters Deepak Chopra stopped by The Daily Ticker set earlier this week to chat with Aaron Task.

Chopra, the co-author of the book War of the Worldviews, says happiness can be boiled down to a formula.

Happiness = set point in the brain (how you look at a situation) + conditions of living + voluntary choices

Let's take a closer look at these variables.

    1. Set point in the brain

Whether you're a glass half full or half empty kind of person is largely formed at a young age. "Unfortunately, this happiness set point is determined for us in our childhood in the first three years of our life," says Chopra. While that may be true, there is hope for those inclined to a pessimistic point of view. "You can change the way you think, you can start to question your limiting beliefs, you can take time to be silent and reflect."

    2. Conditions of living

Here's where money comes into play. And, when it comes to happiness, money is not a big factor. "Only 10-12% of our happiness experience comes from money," Chopra says. "Real happiness comes when you have fulfillment, you have creative expression, you enjoy your work, you're engaged, you make other people happy, you have meaning and purpose in your life."

So while it may not be the root of all happiness, money can lead to evil. "The love of money could be the root of evil," Chopra says, when people are concerned with money for money's sake.

It often seems like the people who say "money can't buy happiness" are the wealthiest people around. Oprah's a good example of one who says this on many of her past shows. Get rid of your $1 Billion and then tell us about money and happiness.

"Money can't buy happiness" Really, Why don't give up all your worldly possessions and live on the street for a 1 month, then we'll ask you the same question. waiting for a response, I won't hold my breath.

I have always thought that the sentiment of "money not buying happiness" in a different way. Undoubtedly, it can provide a person with a lifestyle that is rich and fulfilling. Providing opportunities that would otherwise not be possible. However, it's not a guarantee for happiness or enrichment. I have heard first hand accounts of individuals who predicated their whole lives around acquisition and monetary wealth. This has come at the expense of their families, their values, as well as their health and well-being.

Monetary wealth can provide wonderful opportunities given the right individual. However, it takes more than great riches to be happy, content and loved.

Money can't buy happiness. But it can buy everything else.
      • Road Warrior 6 months ago
Actually, I think it is: "Money can't buy everything, but it can buy everything."

When I eat, it makes me happy. When I can go out to nice places to eat or buy better quality food from the store it makes me even happier. When I can get medicine/heath care for myself, my family or even my pets when we are sick or in pain, that makes me happy. When I can go shopping and buy myself clothes, things of entertainment like an Xbox or take a girl out to a movie or dinner, that makes me happy. Having electricity, water and gas in my house makes me happy. Having a house to live in makes me happy. But, all of those things cost money.

      Ergo, money makes me happy

Or, more honestly, the lack of money will make you unhappy.
      • Skeptic 6 months ago
I thnk his point is that money makes you happy only up to a certain point and then other factors kick in.
    • A Yahoo! User  •  6 months ago

Money can't buy happiness but lack of money is a sure path to unhappiness.
    • Peppino  •  6 months ago
Poverty is misery so YES money can buy happiness. The question is gonna be,do you know what happiness is?
    • Oso Jorge  •  6 months ago
Bottom line, if you have enough money to pay the bills and get by somewhat comfortably, you can be happy. When there is NOT enough money to take care of the basics, that's when people become unhappy because they generally worry more.

Only people with money will tell you that. Give me half of Chopra's income and I will get back to you!

CPA and Mystical tiger are both right.... You will have better choices when you have made a great life....and you must enrich yourself with more than just the money...But i do keep my mind on my money, and my money on my mind....Having the money will bring peace of mind and security, that you cannot have if you are struggling financially...

Wait, did he say "cocaine" at 3:03? aCertain people as much as they try really hard to look and sound beautiful, genuine, interesting, deep, altruistic and honest their true nature shine through, and you can feel more than see who they really are, and to me this guy fits perfectly the stereotypical "celebrity guru #$%$amp;quot; you know celebrities especially movie and pop stars like Madonna they all do at some point the "spiritual thing" and usually involve a charlatan that preach spirituality but all they want is basically money. Here's a very interesting story, about 7 years ago I was going through a lot in New York City and a dear friend of mine told me that in time of crisis she use see a Tibetan monk and that for a while he was her spiritual counselor, and she was going on about how wonderful and non materialistic oriented people they are, so she gave me his cellphone number, I called him up and after 5 minutes into the conversation he asked me point blank: do you have a job? As soon as I said no I don't , and I am also homeless at the moment, he ended the conversation very fast and basically hanged up on me.

'Do whatever you're good at, cocaine, playing with children.' What 'majority of people that don't have to worry about money' is he talking about? Wow, we really have technology to solve global warming and restoring the ecosystem? Where can I send all my earthly possessions to your church?

I have been rich....Then I was poor...Now I am Rich again...Believe me, Rich is better.... I can buy better health care, but that does not mean that the next Stroke won't kill me.. Money does not buy happiness....But if you are happy and have Money....Great...but money does not guarantee that..Don't fool yourself....Enjoy the Journey....
