Economist: Recycling and Hybrids Won’t Save the Planet But Here’s What Will

Follow Yahoo!'s The Daily Ticker on Facebook here!

Every human being on Earth has a carbon footprint.

There are ways to reduce one's impact on the planet, such as driving a hybrid vehicle, recycling, biking to and from work or becoming a vegetarian and choosing only locally sourced food. Cities and world governments as well as major industries and businesses have also become more conscious about climate change or "global warming" and have implemented policies and programs to lower the amount of carbon dioxide they produce or release into the atmosphere.

Gernot Wagner, an economist at the Environmental Defense Fund and the author of the book "But Will the Planet Notice? How Smart Economics Can Save the World," truly appreciates the actions taken by individuals and a growing number of government bodies. But it won't be enough to save Earth, he says, and his latest book was written explicitly for the green community who "think they are making a difference."

"News flash: recycling isn't going to stop global warming," Wagner tells The Daily Ticker's Aaron Task in the attached clip. "All of these individual steps don't add up to nearly enough." Sea temperatures will continue to rise, extreme weather patterns will become the new norm and the slowing of Earth's rotation will persist as long as the major industrial nations bicker and contest serious climate change policy, Wagner says.

Critics and skeptics of global warming who doubt that human-related greenhouse gas emissions are heating up the planet have complicated global efforts to address these concerns.

In the United States, several of the candidates running for the Republican presidential nomination have openly mocked and refuted climate change science and analysis. Texas Governor Rick Perry and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich have both stated they would close the Environmental Protection Agency. All of the Republican candidates want less, not more, federal regulation on greenhouse emissions. However, Wagner says climate change cynics must put aside their personal biases for the betterment of others — and the planet.

"This isn't a bunch of greens basically saying thou shall use canvas bags ideally sourced from locally grown cotton," Wagner notes. "Global warming is not a belief. The great thing about science is that it's true whether you believe it or not."

Climate change is not a relatively recent phenomenon. The noxious effect of global emissions of carbon dioxide on Earth was proven in the 1880s, states Wagner and the sacrifices made by individuals to lower their carbon footprint will not alter these grim statistics: every American emits an average of 20 tons of carbon dioxide every year (Europeans average 10 tons a year) which translates into $400 worth of damage per American (each ton of CO2 pollution causes $20 of damage to ecosystems and human health). Furthermore, according to an analysis by the Global Carbon Project, global CO2 emissions jumped by the largest amount on record in 2010.

There's only one solution to climate change, warns Wagner. "Policy. That's what makes the difference."

The Kyoto protocol, the 1997 agreement by major industrialized nations to establish targets on carbon dioxide emissions, has resulted in more frustrations than results, and its future remains in jeopardy without the ratification by the United States, the world's biggest polluter, who opposes the protocol for not including developing nations like Brazil and China in its emission requirements.

There may not be a global policy consensus on how to slow the heating of Earth's core, but Wagner points to several cities and nations who are instituting their own Earth-friendly rules.

Ireland introduced a 15-cent tax on every plastic bag in 2002 that ultimately led to a 90% reduction in plastic bag usage in just a few months time — or a savings of 1 billion bags per year. Last year Italy announced it would completely ban all plastic bags, and shoppers are now given a choice of cloth, biodegradable or paper bags in exchange. Washington, D.C. store owners charge 5-cents per plastic bag and other major U.S. metropolitan cities are trying to pass similar bag taxes.

Some industries are also taking pro-active approaches to climate change. Starting this year the world's biggest airlines will be charging Europe-bound passengers for their greenhouse gas emissions, which could add another $16 to the cost of a plane ticket. Climate change may be one of the most controversial issues facing world and business leaders but Earth's future, including all of its inhabitants, depends on the decisions made today.

This is propaganda and is probably promoted politically. The real reason for global warming was published a few years ago- reduction in cloud cover, which we can all confirm reduces the warming by the sun. This reduction in cloud cover was caused by the massive releases of radiation from solar flares. This is genuine scientific fact. Interesting is this guy also tries scaring us that the the equator is growing causing the earth to slow (due to CO2?-poppycock!) . The earths crust is hundreds of miles thick.
What can pass through that is precisely certain frequencies of high energy radiation - from solar flares, so this may actually be happening(??), but not by CO2.
Reducing pollution is a good idea. More taxes is not. Safeway is ending plastic bags in CA at the end of the month.

A few decades is alot of time for you and me but a fraction of a nanosecond with respect to planet earth. This guy needs to refer to climate data spanning thousands of years to draw any conclusion that global warming is man-made. If I lived at the beginning of the little ice age, I can conclude we must have done something to cool the earth, even after recording 100 years of past data.

Are you a scientist, David? No, I didn't think so. How much education have you had, David? Sorry if I'd rather believe intelligent people talk about this serious issue. Go get a job.
      • Kristopher L 4 months ago
Uh, looking at data spanning thousands of years is exactly what they have been doing. That's exactly why 98% of scientists think global warming is at least partially man-made.

The best evidence that the current change in CO2 and the current warming is human caused is the geologic record of climate and greenhouse gases.
Ice cores, for example, show CO2 levels varying between 180ppm and 280ppm for hundreds of thousands of years... Until the past 100 years. The current level is almost 300 ppm. What changed? Humans burning fossil fuels.

i love that when aaron asks him at around the 1 min mark what is the proof that this is being caused by man-made emissions, the guy laughs arrogantly and then completely doesn't answer the question. thanks 'daily ticker' for saving me the price of that book.

Compost a conservative, you will save the planet even faster.
      • STEVE 4 months ago
Composting releases methane and carbon dioxide, which lead to global warming.

Governments are by far the biggest energy users and polluters with military production and exercises, police cars cruising for no reason, lots of unnecessary travel, and research that is nothing more than academic welfare.

The planet has warmed and cooled many times without our help. It will do it whether I drive a Prius or an Expedition. We don't really have that much to do with it.
      • WESLEY R 4 months ago
Yes, we do have alot to do with it. And you're right. The earth will continue to warm whether we want it to or not. And the human race will perish accordingly. Hope you'll be happy, John.

Climate and CO2 levels can change for reasons outside human control.
However that doesn't mean that humans can't change the climate.
Mercury can get into food naturally. Adding enough mercury to your food will kill you. Or turn you into a "Mad Hatter".

Unscientific people make me ill. Remain silent and people will think you are a fool, open your mouth and remove all doubt. Yes it goes up and down, we are in an up cycle now. I suppose you didn't take calculus and differential equations, right? There are two components: velocity (direction which is up) and this has been shown to be in the "temp up" direction. Then there is acceleration (rate of change). The humans on the planet are accelerating the effect.

The planet rotates at like 1k MPH at the equator. I doubt a few MPH is going to have much effect. Regardless, this guest was completely useless. He imparted virtually no useful information, nor was he able to articulate his argument very well. Find someone that speaks English and possesses at least some talent at making a point next time please.

this guy needs psychiatric help, where does Columbia University find these fruitcakes, "global warming is slowing down the planet"? is this kid actually teaching your children? God help us !

Anyone who is interested enough to do a little research on their own will soon see that there is no real scientific evidence for MAN MADE global warming or climate change. You can start with a book called "The Deniers" that compiles a number of scientific reports by numerous scientists. Now if you really want to see why these "theories" are bogus look at the money trails. Secretary Stephen Chu has been on top of at least 500 million dollars of government grants to produce "studies" on climate change. Universities have promoted the theories to gain government grants. Al Gore, General Electric and Goldman Sachs have all been set up to make billions off of carbon offset trading and government backed "green" businesses (many of which have since failed and are failing). The government motor companies have been paid by taxpayers to produce the Volt which is defective, non marketable and has sold only a few vehicles and those are recalled but they have made billions off of us taxpayers in the meantime. Third world countries promote the theories because they are angling to gain money from us as reparations for every storm or sunami that has hit their countries since they want to blame our consumerism for the warming and the natural disasters. There is much more including the fraud of the East Anglia group and the Committee on Climate Change. Read about them and you will at least doubt that there is any man made climate change and you will probably agree that there may not be any change at all outside the normal change that has occurred over the millions of years in the past. Don't take the word of those who only seek personal gain from these theories. You will find that the environmental modeling that they have used is flawed and if you have elementary knowledge of statistical analysis you will readily see that they are not realistic much less reliable.

There has not been one assertion made by the AGW/IPCC CO2 scammers that has not be torn to shredds when given the slightest scrutiny. NOT ONE!. Notice those still clinging to the AGW scam are from the same political ideology. Leftist anti american liberal democrats. This dude is from Columbia University. That's all I need to know.

This guy does not come off as credible. He comes off like many people who presuppose a position and then look for circumstances and reasons to support their view without objectively thinking through all the facts and challenging their own point of view by diligently inspecting the evidence against their view. It's similar to those who reject Christianity and the Bible as being credible.
    • Johnb_dca  •  4 months ago
Out come the global warming deniers. These guys are doing exactly what the article points out -- sorry, but you can't make facts go away by not believing them.

One comment though. While getting rid of plastic bags in favor of paper may have many benefits, it won't do anything for global warming, but has the opposite effect -- it takes far more energy to make a paper bag than a plastic bag.

"Some industries are also taking pro-active approaches to climate change. Starting this year the world's biggest airlines will be charging Europe-bound passengers for their greenhouse gas emissions, which could add another $16 to the cost of a plane ticket."

and who gets the $16? this is a proactive approach to the bottom line for the airline, not climate change.

      One question and one statement:
How many tons of CO2 do the plants eat every year?
Our Sun is a variable star.
    • JamesZ  •  Bloomingdale, Illinois  •  4 months ago
Although his statement about policy has merit, he needs to get his facts right. Since the industrialized world has transferred much of their manufacturing to China, (so we can feel good about not polluting) who doesn't care about global warming, CHINA is now the world's largest polluter, not the US. China's airlines are also refusing to pay the European carbon tax for aircraft. Also, the earth's core is not warming, it's the atmosphere that is warming. Global warming will only stop if we stop burning carbon, which will require nuclear plants fueling electric cars and heat pumps for the home. So policy means no more coal, oil or natural gas for energy.

It's like your car on a sunny day. The sunlight goes through the window, much of that energy converts from light energy to heat energy. The light energy can pass back through the window the heat energy remains trapped and the car interior grows hotter and hotter. Carbon dioxide traps energy the same way a car window traps the energy. We are all like children, trapped in a back seat while the earth grows hotter and hotter.
