Jack Abramoff: The Truth About My Crimes, Jail, And Life As A Felon

Follow Yahoo!'s The Daily Ticker on Facebook here!

A decade ago, Jack Abramoff was one of the Washington's richest and most-successful lobbyists.

Representing Indian tribes, telecom companies, sovereign governments, and dozens of other clients, he played the lobbying game extremely aggressively--so aggressively that he eventually caught the attention of the press and federal investigators.

At first, Abramoff says, he thought he was being unfairly singled out and that the scandal would quickly blow over. Then he began reviewing some of the ~850,000 emails he had written during his lobbying career and realized that, at times, even in a city and profession in which "legal bribery" is business as usual, he had crossed the line.

In early 2006, Abramoff pleaded guilty to three felonies, including conspiracy to bribe public officials, and was sentenced to 6 years in jail. He served three and a half years at a minimum security prison in Cumberland, Maryland, as inmate number 27593-112. He was then released to a Baltimore halfway house in 2010, where he worked at a pizza parlor for about $10 an hour.

Since then, Abramoff has published a book--CAPITOL PUNISHMENT: The Hard Truth About Washington Corruption From America's Most Notorious Lobbyist--and started giving speeches. He still owes $44 million in "restitution," so a big chunk of any money he makes will go to the government.

Many Americans view those convicted of crimes as "criminals" who are fundamentally different than everyone else. And although the label is technically true--they have, after all, committed crimes--it often draws a much sharper line between criminals and "good people" than is frequently the case. "Criminals," in many cases, are good people who have committed crimes. And Jack Abramoff seems an excellent example of that.

In this interview, Abramoff talks about what it was like to fall so hard, what jail was like, and how life has been since his release.

Jack Abramoff was, is, and always will be a douche. He's a poster child for regulations and statutory protections with razor sharp punitive penalties. Hurt this #$%$ in the pocketbook and make them do decades behind bars, only thing gets their attention.

a poster child for condom use you mean

The lobbying in my opinion is nothing more than buying votes. Make it illegal now folks it is making the citizens voting power worthless.
      • L 2 months ago
It's up to the Republicans who got their Republican Justices to allow Citizens United...which has made votes bought by whoever has the most money to stay in the game...Newt is one that should have disappeared a while back...and counting.
      • Debbie 2 months ago
Santorum ran the republican K-Street Project in the Senate (part of same group) He met with Lobbyist every Tuesday to see what they could do for them in exchange for Campaign Cash !
      • looking for reason 2 months ago
World Citizen, you just don't take lobbying for exactly what it is, influence peddling and bribery both of which makes felons out of those that buy and those that take the money. Gussy it up all those politicians and corporate hacks want it is illegal business that needs a competent enforcement agency and laws to oversee these totally criminal people on both ends of the dollar or millions of dollars.

Martha -= Rock Hill, South Carolina; You are so very right read Blood Bankers by James Henry, then read the books about Burnie Madoff, an the books by Lou Dobbs, I do not believe the world was ever as corrupt as it is now. I truly believe it is related to the devaluing of human life by abortion. The two most corrupt things to happen in the last century was leagalizing abortion an Trade with atheist, criminal government Red China

Anthony....you had me until you got to abortion. I think it's more a greed and power problem. Washington pretends to be all holier than thou, not a one of em is a Christian.

How much does it cost to bribe a corrupt politician into doing what's morally right?
      • Poindexter 3 months ago
        Ask the JEWS.

Very interesting concept....except morally right politicians would NOT fit in.
      • Anonymous 2 months ago
First we have to find one with morals. The salary they get from us is no incentive to serve the people. The millions that float around congress cannot be matched by us.

Convicted felon? Maybe he should run for Congress? He'd fit right in; except he's the one with the formal record.
    • William  •  Dover, New Jersey  •  3 months ago
In reality half of Congress should be in prison. It's up to the people to get them out of Washington. There are no honest people in our government today.
    • MC  •  3 months ago
Lobbying is perhaps the biggest reason the rich are getting richer and the rest of us are paying for it.
    • paul b  •  3 months ago
he "bribed" officials.... what a crock of crap.... Lobbying is terrible for america.
    • tomas  •  Winston-Salem, North Carolina  •  3 months ago
It may be time to get rid of all lobbying activities and let the congressmen/women do their own job, without such evil influence?
    • Ron  •  Lexington, Kentucky  •  3 months ago
What's amazing is that his partner that he funneled the money through is Grover Norquist who was never charged. Ralph Reed of the Christian Coalition was another, but his involvement was exposed after he ran for governor of Georgia and he had to drop out. Abramoff and one of Tom Delay's aids were the only ones out of a dozen to do time.
    • Dunnyveg  •  San Angelo, Texas  •  3 months ago
Abramoff did the crimes, but he didn't do the time. For example, here in Texas if Abramoff would have held up a liquor store and gotten fifty bucks, he'd be looking at at least twenty years of hard time, especially for multiples offenses. Do a white collar crime and the perp gets practically nothing.

Gee, I wonder why. Could it be that prisons are places in which big criminals lock away the petty ones?
    • Frodo  •  3 months ago
Thanks to our un supreme court, lobbyists now have free reign.

Repeal Citizen's United. Do away with it. Coporations are business entities not citizens. They should not be able to pump unlimited funds into campaigns and thus sway legislators to act in their interests. This puts the ordinary citizen at a disadvantage. The term "Citizens United" is deceptive and disingenuous. It is not in the interests of citizens at all.
    • Kweso  •  Rochester, Minnesota  •  3 months ago
To the extent that people have to go through a third party like lobbyist to petition their government, it suggests that the constitution is not working for ordinary people. You shouldn't need criminals like Abramoff to speak to your senator for you.

Why isn't he still in jail? Because he's a White Collar Criminal. Had he been a Blue Collar Bank Robber he'd be still in a Federal Pen.
    • Brad  •  3 months ago
Our once *supreme* court should take up this issue and now, lobbyists are destroying this nation from the out side in.
Wait a minute, isnt our *supreme* court the same one that lets corporations act as people and give as much $ as they want to any politician? I have yet to see a corporation join the service and go to war,or even in the supermarket,I never see corporations out buying essentials. Thats because they ARENT people
