Luminaries Respond To Steve Jobs’ Death

Provided by the Business Insider's Zeke Miller and Matt Rosoff:

Here is what politicians and luminaries are saying about the death of technology visionary and Apple CEO Steve Jobs.

Apple CEO Tim Cook in an email to staff:

I have some very sad news to share with all of you. Steve passed away earlier today.

Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being.

President Barack Obama:

Michelle and I are saddened to learn of the passing of Steve Jobs. Steve was among the greatest of American innovators - brave enough to think differently, bold enough to believe he could change the world, and talented enough to do it.

By building one of the planet's most successful companies from his garage, he exemplified the spirit of American ingenuity. By making computers personal and putting the internet in our pockets, he made the information revolution not only accessible, but intuitive and fun. And by turning his talents to storytelling, he has brought joy to millions of children and grownups alike. Steve was fond of saying that he lived every day like it was his last. Because he did, he transformed our lives, redefined entire industries, and achieved one of the rarest feats in human history: he changed the way each of us sees the world.

The world has lost a visionary. And there may be no greater tribute to Steve's success than the fact that much of the world learned of his passing on a device he invented. Michelle and I send our thoughts and prayers to Steve's wife Laurene, his family, and all those who loved him.

Apple Board of Directors:

We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Jobs passed away today.

Steve's brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve.

His greatest love was for his wife, Laurene, and his family. Our hearts go out to them and to all who were touched by his extraordinary gifts.

Steve Jobs' Family:

Steve died peacefully today surrounded by his family.

In his public life, Steve was known as a visionary; in his private life, he cherished his family. We are thankful to the many people who have shared their wishes and prayers during the last year of Steve's illness; a website will be provided for those who wish to offer tributes and memories.

We are grateful for the support and kindness of those who share our feelings for Steve. We know many of you will mourn with us, and we ask that you respect our privacy during our time of grief.

Bill Gates:

I'm truly saddened to learn of Steve Jobs' death. Melinda and I extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends, and to everyone Steve has touched through his work.

Steve and I first met nearly 30 years ago, and have been colleagues, competitors and friends over the course of more than half our lives.

The world rarely sees someone who has had the profound impact Steve has had, the effects of which will be felt for many generations to come.

For those of us lucky enough to get to work with him, it's been an insanely great honor. I will miss Steve immensely.

Google CEO Larry Page:

I am very, very sad to hear the news about Steve. He was a great man with incredible achievements and amazing brilliance. He always seemed to be able to say in very few words what you actually should have been thinking before you thought it. His focus on the user experience above all else has always been an inspiration to me. He was very kind to reach out to me as I became CEO of Google and spend time offering his advice and knowledge even though he was not at all well. My thoughts and Google's are with his family and the whole Apple family.

Google's Sergey Brin: Steve, your passion for excellence is felt by anyone who has ever touched an Apple product. On behalf of all of us at Google and more broadly in technology, you will be missed very much.

Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg: Steve, thank you for being a mentor and a friend. Thanks for showing that what you build can change the world. I will miss you.

Disney CEO Bob Iger (Jobs was on the board of Disney): Steve Jobs was a great friend as well as a trusted advisor. His legacy will extend far beyond the products he created or the businesses he built. It will be the millions of people he inspired, the lives he changed, and the culture he defined. Steve was such an "original," with a thoroughly creative, imaginative mind that defined an era. Despite all he accomplished, it feels like he was just getting started. With his passing the world has lost a rare original, Disney has lost a member of our family, and I have lost a great friend. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Laurene and his children during this difficult time.

Barack Obama's reelection campaign: Rest in peace, Steve Jobs. From all of us at #Obama2012, thank you for the work you make possible every day—including ours.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg: Steve Jobs saw the future and brought it to life

AOL Co-Founder Steve Case: I feel honored to have known Steve Jobs. He was the most innovative entrepreneur of our generation. His legacy will live on for the ages.

Arianna Huffington: Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. —Steve Jobs, 2005

GOP Presidential Candidate Jon Huntsman: Sad to hear about the passing of Steve Jobs, a true inspiration and a great American innovator.

California Gov. Jerry Brown: Steve Jobs was a great California innovator who demonstrated what a totally independent and creative mind can accomplish. Few people have made such a powerful and elegant imprint on our lives. Anne and I wish to express our deepest sympathy to Steve's wife, Laurene, and their entire family.

Speaker of the House John Boehner: Steve Jobs changed the world for the better w/ his innovations & genius. R.I.P.

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor: "Saddened to hear the news about Steve Jobs — he changed the world and made it a better place."

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi: Steve Jobs was a visionary who changed the way we live. His sage advice was respected by policymakers on both sides of the aisle.

Arnold Schwarzenegger: Steve lived the California Dream every day of his life and he changed the world and inspired all of us.

Mexican President Calderon: The world has lost one of the most visionary minds of our time. Steve Jobs left us an example of struggle, inspiration and creativity.

You really cant compare him to Tesla, but you can compare him to Edison. It was fasinating to live in the same generation and witness the progress of this Great American

Anyone else notice that the comments from politicians are by far the blandest and least expressive? As always, playing it safe and parsing every word for fear of who may be listening. They are the very antithesis of the example Steve Jobs set.

I remember our family's first computer was an Apple IIC. I remembered we all had a ball with it when we first brought it home (even though its specifications might seem primitive by today's standards). Opening the box was fascinating. I can remember doing my homework on the word processor and printing out essays on a dot matrix printer. And then playing my favorite games that came on those two sided floppy disks. To me at my young age, that was the cutting edge and I still have the computer in perfect working condition. The Apple II computers blazed a trail for the future and I thank Steve Jobs for giving me such great memories. My condolences go out to his family and friends. May he rest in peace.

As I heard about the sad news that Steve Jobs had passed away today, I looked around me.and realized that the whole world and all of it's inhabitants were affected and changed by this one man and his vision. Because of Steve Jobs we have the Internet, personal computers, smart phones, and the second information revolution in the history of human beings. I am counting the first one as the invention of the printing press. I would not have my job without his inventions, and people would have so much less access to everything, than they have now.
I am sure there is great rejoicing on the other side, as there is great sorrow here, for Steve Jobs return home to where our spirits dwell.

his success showed us what a fine mind is capable of. Despite all the difficulties we are facing and will face down the dark track, human being is a great creature and prevail.

Hope politicians know that Americans don't need their help, Americans need the freedom to realize our potentials.

First it was MSDOS on a 50mhz,(what a screamer!) Then the big leagues, a Powerbook 100mhz! I thought, what a solid operating system, and it's kinda cool to throw things at the trash can and hit it. Then I was lost for a long time, (windows).... But hooray! I came to my senses! I'm typing this on a 2011 iMac! Thanks Steve. RIP
