Peter Schiff: Why Ron Paul Is Good for America

Follow Yahoo!'s The Daily Ticker on Facebook here!

Happy New Year and welcome back to the presidential political circus which begins in earnest today with the Iowa caucus followed closely by the New Hampshire primary on Jan. 10.

Three candidates are in a dead heat for Iowa, according to a poll released Sunday. Public Policy Polling had Ron Paul with 20% of the vote, Mitt Romney at 19% and Rick Santorum at 18%.

Peter Schiff of Euro Pacific Capital and a former Republican Senate candidate joined The Daily Ticker's Henry Blodget to discuss the presidential election and his top pick in Iowa.

"I hope it is Ron Paul who wins Iowa and not just Iowa but obviously New Hampshire, the nomination and the presidency," says Schiff who considers himself a true supporter of limited government, like Ron Paul, as opposed to the many Republicans who just talk the talk and do not walk the walk. (See: It's Time to Roll Back Big Government: Rep. Ron Paul Says 'No' to Debt Ceiling Increase)

Schiff acknowledges a Ron Paul nomination is a long shot and concedes that Mitt Romney will likely be the candidate whose name appears on the general election ballot. But that won't stop Schiff from continuing to spread the word about Paul.

"The reason our economy got into so much trouble is because we completely abandoned the free market and we followed the government policies of Bush and now we have got the even bigger government policies of Obama," he says. "I hope we can fully repudiate big government whether it is Republicans or Democrats that want it and we can embrace Ron Paul and change the Republican Party and bring it back to the party of limited government."

Its ironic if Romney wins because Republicans think he's the only one that can beat Obama. He's the candidate that's most like Obama!

My sentiments precisely! Talk about moot choices in November (sigh!)...

Funny how since WWII anybody not wanting to be an aggressive war monger around the globe gets called an isolationist. Most of the countries of the world involved in peaceful free trade and travel around the world yet none of them have troops and bases around the world. How many countries of the world that are our competitors or enemies have occupying troops doing nation building? Yet none of these countries are called isolationist. Oh, we have come so far from the warnings of our founding fathers. Countries collapse economically before they lose militarily.
Ron Paul wants a strong country and defense. Lets nation build at home.

I would love to see what Ron Paul would do as President. Would he really fire everyone at the IRS and Department of Education?
      • Jason 4 months ago
        I hope so.
      • Hoggy 4 months ago
That's what I'd like to see, if he'd really go through with it. It'd be worth 4 years of the worst-case isolationism people say he'd bring just to see if he would do these two things.
      • Buzz 4 months ago
he'd do what he *could* do. Both things you mention are beyond the power of the Presidency.

An interesting comparison of Republican candidates and past administrations.

IMHO, it's most unfortunate indeed that America finds itself in this predicament ... failing in just about every arena both at home & internationally ... it's also unfortunate that regardless of who wins the elction, there will be no easy fix, promises will continue to be unkept, the suckling sounds will continue on the pig's teets, & the party still isn't over for so many especially the unions that still have a strong lockhold on every level of government, etc., etc. If America truly wants to have real change for the better, it needs to do more than just vote & wait for something to happen. I for one am very afraid for our future ... we are no longer the greatest nation in the world.

People ranting about "stay the course" and "long live the status quo". If the last few years have taught us anything it's that Republicans and especially Democrats are not getting the job done and have run out of not only ideas, (Ryan is an exception), but especially run out of "backbone". All the status quo Congressment want things to stay the same or, like Barney Frank, are quitting to enjoy their well paid retirements. We can't keep kicking the can down the road. It's time for real change. How about a tiny Federal Government-NOW.

Well, these are same people that say they're bullish on stocks while shorting everything in sight. His beliefs are about as valuable as a congressional promise.
      • Rafael M 4 months ago
He's actually betting against stocks and most paper assets. He's openly shorting the stock market and the US economy by advocating gold. Pretty honest.

Peter's always been a long term investor, never going after the short-sale, he accurately predicted the 2008 crash when everyone was laughing at him on tv (lookup: Peter Schiff was right). but you probably listen to jim cramer for advice. find out what you're going to talk about before you start letting us know what you think.

Ron Paul is the only one with any common sense. If you are in a hole of debt, the first thing to do is to stop digging it deeper! Vote for Limited government, Balanced budgets and Freedom!

Peace sounds so scary and crazy. We should get into a war w Iran ASAP bc that always works. And we should let ibanker scumbags like Romney ruin America. Sike!

I reference the CIA World Fact Book. Singapore has limited social programs, limited regulation and the most robust free market practices in the world. They are among the strongest economies in the world.

Ron Paul is embracing the future because we can't afford the present.

You should have used the Singapore World Fact Book, not one funded by US tax dollars and big government.

Ask yourself one thing: has the socialist system in the U.S. of the last 50 years been good for you? If yes - vote Obama for more of the same, if no - vote Ron Paul for radical change.

7 of Romney's top 10 campaign donors are big banks. Bankers are smart and have our best interests in mind, so I'm going to listen to their wisdom. When we've spent all our money we can always print more or borrow from our friends in China. Our national security is in jeopardy unless we engage in more military actions overseas. As long as our elected leaders tell us everything is okay, I am happy. I am a douchebag.
    • Anonymous  •  San Diego, California  •  4 months ago
Yes On Ron Paul. We need a strong person like him to get the fat cat DC powerlusters out of a job. Romney et al would be more of the same - continuing to bankrupt our great country for their own aims. Romeny is Obama in disguise. Wake up America. Paul is our chance to take back our country.

Ron Paul is the only one that will get rid of the status quo and help us get on a new track. What this country needs is to flush the toilet on the whole system and start over. We need someone in office that puts policy before politics. Get rid of the corrupt aristocricy and the ruling class and start making legislation that makes sense. Ron Paul is the best choice to fix this country.

We simply cannot continue to "Buy Votes With Freebies".This has been going on since the 1960's. It has built up a huge dependant class that are all going to vote for what they
see as thier "Right to have everything free". Add up the State County and municipal "dependant public sector unions" They are gigantic Voting blocks that will not
have thier "Free Lunch" interupted by Budget Cuts. They want it to never end.
If we don't end it now it's over for us all.
    • Bill  •  4 months ago
I disagree with Pete. We got in trouble because people lied on their loan applications and the banks (and the real estate industry - since they were making their generous 6% cut) allowed and even encouraged it, since the banks were selling this toxic crap to someone else. Free markets work, when there is sufficient adult supervision to prevent unethical and illegal behavior, which always occurs unless prevented. The bad behavior occurs first by a few sleazy outfits, and then it becomes the norm when nothing is done to stop it.
