On Christmas Day, pop singer and fashion designer Jessica Simpson confirmed rumors that she is pregnant with her second child. Simpson, who recently lost more than 50 pounds on Weight Watchers (WTW), reportedly signed a $4 million contract with the weight management company earlier this year. According to a Weight Watchers spokesperson, Simpson "will not be following the program during the pregnancy while her weight and well-being is monitored by her obstetrician, as is recommended for any woman during pregnancy. After she gives birth, Simpson and her doctor will decide when she should resume following the Weight Watchers program."
Simpson's surprise pregnancy raised questions about her contract with Weight Watchers especially since new commercials featuring Simpson's svelte body began airing this week.
“It’s wonderful news and we couldn’t be happier for Jessica, Eric and big sister-to-be Maxwell,” said Cheryl Callan, Senior Vice President of Marketing for Weight Watchers in a press release. “We’ve seen first-hand that Jessica has a refreshed outlook on food, activity and the importance of developing healthy habits, which we hope will guide her through this next pregnancy and beyond. She has come a long way and we know her story and success will continue to inspire others.”
Simpson's "Expect Amazing" ad campaign shows the singer posing for the cameras in skin tight jeans and cowboy boots just seven months after giving birth to daughter Maxwell. Simpson references her pregnancy in one of the commercials.
David Kirchhoff, CEO of Weight Watchers, told The Daily Ticker that Simpson's pregnancy won't impact their business arrangement. (Note: the interview was taped before Simpson's announcement).
"Jessica is appearing in our TV spots come this January," he says. "We are thrilled with our partnership with her. She is fantastic. She has done great on the program. It has had a huge impact on her relationship with food, in a positive way. This is about real life. It is about changing your life in a healthy way. That is what we are all about and we could not feel better about her in that capacity."
