Are Republicans Intentionally Sabotaging Economy For Political Gain?

Corporate board members, financial advisers, and other professionals are bound by a principle called "fiduciary duty," in which they are required to act in the best interests of the clients or companies they are serving.

As an American citizen, I would think--or at least hope--that elected government representatives would be bound by a similar principle--that they would put the country's interests firsts, even if those interests conflicted with their personal desire to gain more power or get re-elected.

My colleague Dan Gross, however, who has covered Washington for two decades, thinks that this principle--if it ever existed--has been thrown out the window.

Basically, Dan argues, Republicans are doing everything they can to ensure that the economy remains a mess when it comes time for the 2012 election. The Republican hope here, Dan explains, is that Americans will vote with their wallets in 2012--and, in so doing, vote more Democrats out of office.

Now, there's no question that voters do vote with their wallets: The deteriorating economy in 2008 helped President Obama get elected. And there's nothing wrong with stumping for policies that you honestly believe will help the country over the long term, even if you think they will cause some short-term pain.

But there's a big difference between that and intentionally doing things that will sabotage the economy over the next 12 months just to influence the next election.

If this is actually what some Republicans are doing, Americans of both parties should be outraged. The first loyalty of any elected representative should be acting in the best interests of the country., and advocating policies that you know will hurt the country--or stonewalling ones that will help it--is a gross dereliction of professional and civic responsibility.

There should not have to be a legal principle like "fiduciary duty" that requires legislators to act in the best interests of the country. But if Dan's right, it sounds like there may need to be.

NOT hyperbolic. It is as said in the introduction.

Not sure Henry where you and Dan have been but what is best for the client is no longer a concern of big business and has not been for awhile.

In 2010, Replublicans ran on JOBS, JOBS, JOBS. Name one piece of legislation that DIRECTLY creates jobs. Cut the @#$% about ObamaCare repeal will create jobs. Cut the @#$% that lowering taxes on the wealthy will create jobs quickly (or at all). Oh, sure, they might add a 2nd pool boy, or yardman. They might repaint the living room in the vacation home again, since Buffy is getting bored.

Now, how much of their efforts have been to ELIMINATE jobs? I bet people at Planned Parenthood and NPR work(ed) for a paycheck. I bet Federal regulators get paid. These are all jobs Republicans want to eliminate. Look at all the state funding that is drying up. That is contributing to jobs being lost. What was Scott Walker's contribution to jobs? Yeah techers, you can keep your job, but we're going to take away any control or dignity you might have had, and lower pay and benefits. Congrats for helping the economy Scott.

Sorry, I better get back to work. No time to offer more examples.

Yeah, that part about hastening the day we have to confront the debt ceiling by keeping the Bush tax cuts. That's not an example is it?
      • People Power II 11 months ago
        No it's not.

Runaway spending is killing our economy.
        Use your brain.

Claiming that trying to cut runaway spending is an attack on the economy is absolutely ludicrous.

What Reagan did, and what the Republicans will do, if they get the power to do it is this:

        Cut spending.
Raise interest rates to stave off inflation.
Engage in FISCAL stimulus - cutting corporate taxes, getting rid of loopholes, stimulate PRIVATE investment.

JFK, Reagan and Bush ALL did that - and it worked extremely well in all three cases.

THERE IS NO CREDIBLE EXAMPLE GIVEN IN THIS ARTICLE.
        NONE AT ALL.
    • Andrew  •  11 months ago
Maybe Gross has his own agenda... does he see the economy sputtering and think that Newsweek "America's Back!" cover is going to come back to haunt him?
    • Linda  •  11 months ago
I will not be suckered in to believe it is just the GOP.
It is the entire Congress and the entire House with the exception of a few in both parties.

They seem to be working for their own interests. Both Parties.

Fire them all and fill their seats with people who will work for us, the people.

Both parties hold America hostage for their own benefit.

It is mind boggling the media sides with either party. This article is pointing fingers. Media should report not point.

I do think this is a biased article.
It is all of them, Congress and the House with the exception of a few.

What would the Dems and Independents have to gain by deliberately sabotaging the economy, unemployment, gas prices? Nothing! Who would possibly gain by doing this? The Rebubs, of course. They want the White House and will sacrifice this country to get there. Once in it will be amazing how quickly the economy will improve, jobs will be available and unemployment and gas prices will be significantly lower until the next election. Check your history. This is how they operate.
      • Actuarial 11 months ago
"Once in it will be amazing how quickly the economy will improve, jobs will be available and unemployment and gas prices will be significantly.." Didn't happen. Just after spending another 5 trillion dollars.

Surprise Surprise!! Surprise that they didn't do anything good when they had 100% control of WH, Senate and House.

Now 5 months after they lost some control of the House - it's GOP fault. How laughable -
Exactly the same mentality that keeps the ghetto people in ghetto --- only forever.

Why don't these two left wing democrats Obama drones acknowledge that in 2009 and 2010 when Obama had a House with a huge democratic majority and a super majority, Filibuster proof Senate, that could pass or not pass anything he and they wanted that they did absolutely nothing to create an environment to encourage the business community to invest and create jobs. Instead he and his socialist progressive liberals in the legislature rammed through health care with an unconstitutional individual mandate, which is raising the cost to businesses to buy health insurance for their employees, and they Rammed through the Dodd-Frank
Financial bill which contains onerous regulations on businesses. In those two years nothing was done about reforming entitlements, (Federal entitlements have $60 Trillion dollars in unfunded mandates. This past year there was a $40 Billion shortfall in social security revenue vs outlay. And Obama with the Payroll holiday tax bill is taking $120 Billion dollars out of social security for 2010 and proposes to do so in 2011 Pay attention seniors and all others about to become eligible for social security. Obama-care took $500 Million dollars out of Medicare to put into Medicaid
to raise the number of people on medicaid by 15 million to @ 75 milliolm. 48 Million
people on food stamps. Since the 53% of higher wage earners pay 97% of all personal federal income taxes they are the Americans subdizing our nanny state. That is redistribution of the wealth. Obama wants to run against a do nothing congress. If he does he will be forced to run against the do nothing democratic controlled Senate. The Democratic controlled senate has not passed a bjudget in three years. And in two of those three years the democrats held a filibuster majority of 60 demoicrat votes. In March 2011, within 2 months after they took control
of the house the republicans passed Rep. Ryan's budget which cut $6 Trillion in debt over ten years. Obama and Reid declared the house budget bill "dead on arrival'
in the senate. But the democratic senate did not pass a budget for fiscal 2012. On purpose. For political reasons. To allow Obama to run against a do nothing congress. Why don't Gross and Blodgett discuss these actions (or lack of actions)
by Obama and the democratic senate. If Obama called Sen. Reid and told him to pass a budget in the Senate Sen. Reid would hop to it. Sen. Reid believes Obama walks on water.

How is this new to these idiots? I don't even work "inside the beltway" and it's been obvious since Mitch McConnell's famous line about his only goal is to make sure Obama doesn't get re-elected. I eman seriously. These idiot reporters and pundits need to stop hanging out, havong drinks and going to dinner with the politicians they're covering. There should be some sort of rule about keeping their distance.

The Republican leadership represents only the richest Americans not the common working man for example nurses, school teachers, law enforcement, and others etc who makes over $40,000 a year with no dependents single they have to pay taxes, or if they are married with no children and both incomes total $80,000 they have to pay taxes as well. I feel as a person myself who fall in this range of pay is very unfair and if you are in the same shoes who pay taxes you should feel the same way. Yes I want to own my own business but can't becuase you have so much money to put down to run it. I was not born with a silverspoon in my mouth. When I drive by and see a run down houses with a bunch of poor trashy looking people living in these conditions with sign of a republican candidate in the yard with the house on wheels and the grass up to your knees it makes me wonder when these indiviuals who go to the polls and vote for a republican and can't even afford to fix their house and this is what you mean the better for the american people. Please and this is only one example come to dirty South sometimes and tell me what have the Republicans down for us lately!!!! The Republican candidate only come to Myrtle Beach, Florence, and Columbia ask them to come to Dillion SC, and this only one of the poor rural towns in SC and trust me there are many more. I feel they are like scorpios they only try to bad mouth Obama but no one still has not made no effort to show me they did anything. The nasty comments I seen so far you all still like a deer in head light with no clue we in the riches country and still don't know what to do. Stop whinning and blaming and work together.

The Republican leadership has stated on many occasions that their main goal is to hurt Obama politically. Any improvements and/or anything going well for America would look good on Obama and hurt the GOP's Presidential chances. So, duh, of course it's sabotage. Unfortunately the mess will be even bigger for a potential GOP President and we may never be able to make a come back. The Democrats are only talking about raising taxes on the top 2% earners who aren't creating jobs now but are hoarding it. They aren't talking about raising everyone's taxes which is pure Republican propaganda. Everything needs to be on the table for America to get out of this mess.

If the republican and democrat congressional members were really working in earnst for the American people they would not only talk about cutting spending they would have at the top of their to do lists completely overhauling our tax codes to make them simple and provide more of an even playing field for the majority ofl hard working Americans.
Over the years all of those tax favors in the form of exemptions and loopholes and subsidies to special interest were being done by both republicans and democrats to feed their political machines. If congress doesn't eliminate these type of tax favors and subsidies our country will continue to have more economic pain. Our tax codes because of these favors and years of abuses by congress are to a significant degree counter productive for the majority of hard working American housholds, and hurting our economy.
Prior to free trade the government and private sector jobs were in competiton for jobs almost exclusively within the borders of our country. Fedral and state coffers were benefiting from exponential/compounding growth in income tax revenue due to wage increases and inflationary trends. Now due to free trade and millions of jobs once held by americans in the private sector are being shipped overseas for lower wages and benefit costs. The exponential/compounding growth in income tax revenue is no longer happening in this post peak free trade phase of US jobs being shipped overseas. It is also causing imbalances because the private sector job force is no longer supplying the same pre free trade compounding income tax revenue needed to support the federal and state jobs wages and benefits. It is also part of the economic puzzle that is causing many states to find themselves with difficult fiscal problems.
Finding ways to take the tax burden off of companies that operate entirely within the US borders that creates jobs would be a step in the right direction. Giving tax incentives to companies for new hires would help. Use increases in consumption/sales taxes on all of the consumer goods coming into our country that are totally made in free trade countries to replace the taxes being eliminated of entirely based US companies. If we don't have incentives to create jobs we will continue to have economic problems. Also eliminate non essential welfare costs period.

EAST COAST VISITOR, The high favorable respones to posts happen on those posts that are a few sentences long. With all of the daily pressures consuming the precious time American households do have it has increasing been harder for them to really get into what is and has been happening under the surface in the way congress has been leading our government.I believe congress has been taking advantage of that by giving the American public surface treatment. I f the American public takes the time to really dig into the way our government is running they would be very angry and want to do something to change it by putting pressure on their congressional members.
The use of President Obama or Bush's name by congressional to lay blame is an attempt to deflect the focus away from congress on to the presidents.
THE REAL PROBLEMS WITH OUR COUNTRY ARE THE RESULT OF CONGRESS. EACH STATE NEEDS TO FIRE THEM ALL, (INCUMBENTS) IN THE NEXT ELECTION UNTIL THEY UNDERSTAND THE MAJORITY OF AMERICANS WANT A GIVERNMENT FOR THE PEOPLE BY THE PEOPLE. ONE NATION UNDER GOD, INGOD WE TRUST.

Since the day Obama was elected the GOP took obstructionism to new heights. They used the filibuster more than any other time in history. They wanted Obama to fail no matter the cost. Look at every vote.; not one GOP dissenter.
      • Hope and Change 11 months ago
Thank of the mess we would be in if Obama had gotten his way on everything. What a loser.
      • Beachcomber 11 months ago
It is not about getting you way on everything. DC Is supposed to work together. When one side does not want to work; nothing gets done and that fails us all.

History and honest people will see that the GOP did nothing to help Obama and this nation get better. Saying no all the time solves nothing. Focusing on idiotic issues like his birth certificate and death panels does nothing but how you have nothing to offer.

GOP is dying as a party because they capitulated to the crazy base.

wonder why there is so much lobbying if people are supposed to believe in the free market. im guessing that most people are hypocrites. lobbying for beneficial regulations has been a tactic of big business for a long time. political corruption extends to both parties. dodd took lots of money from the financial industry at the same time that republicans were taking money from the same people. neither party is innocent

Its a shame that American politics has been degraded to the point that Mr, Gross can make his point somewhat believable. When you look at the behavior of our politicians in their personal lives, it does kind of make you scratch your head and wonder just how far they would go...democrat or republican.

Congress acts on there own best interest. Not the USA. Free markets that are free to leave the USA should be TAXED. 100% tax on all imported products. The USA has been mislead by wealthy importers using slave labor from Asia, that a free market is best for the USA, what @#$%.
