It’s Too Late for Obama to Create Jobs, Says ECRI’s Achuthan

President Obama has nominated Princeton University professor Alan Krueger as the new chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers. The hope is Krueger, who previously served in the Obama administration as a Treasury official, can help with the President's forthcoming jobs plan, scheduled to be unveiled in a speech on September 8.

Krueger is a labor economist, but "it's too late" for the government to spur job growth, Economic Cycle Research Institute co-founder Lakshman Achuthan tells The Daily Ticker's Aaron Task in the accompanying video. "There's nothing they're going to be able to do about that near-term direction in the unemployment rate, especially if we slip into a recession because every time you have a recession by definition the unemployment rate will be spiking."

Nearly four years after our last recession began unemployment is currently 9.2% and job growth remains slow at best.

As we noted in an earlier clip ECRI isn't ready to make a new recession call but Achuthan says the time to act was in the spring when the economic indicators started to weaken. "We were above 200,000 [monthly payrolls] and we're not going back there anytime soon," he says. "We're going to continue to weaken at least through the end of this year," which is (more) grim news for the millions of Americans in need of work.

I'm like many Americans who voted for the President back In 2008,with hopes he would do all those things he promised. Obamacare has made many of our USA companies move out of this nation. Sure getting off fossil fuels is a great thing to do,But until then this Nation needs fuel. Look we have some kick #$%$ American oil companies in this nation. The gulf took a hit by BP in the world's worst spill ever. I spend 23 years in the oil business. When companies forget about safety then things like that happen. We need Jobs now let's get this President out of the way. There are a few others we need to remove from Washington DC as well. Cap and Trade needs to be Improved. Tax's on Small Business need to be drop from 35% to 8%. And the Jobs will come back. We need to stop Washington DC from letting foreign corps. come to America and remove our drinking water, can't remember the company's name but there pumping the Great Lakes dry. China is coming here and buying all the fresh water they can get there hands on. In a few short years Americans wouldn't have fresh water. There are many things wrong with our Nation and a lot with our government. I was telling my wife I wonder what the Founding Fathers of the USA would say about there dream and the government, and all the freedoms were losing. I love to go hurting but pretty soon I'm sure the government will try and take our rights away from owning a gun. Then they'll me and my family and friends we can't go hunting any more. What is really sad is most Americans don't care until it's knocking on there front door. Well my friends, family and other Americans it's time we fired Washington DC and find someone who still cares about all the people in America....

I have posted many times that in three years President Obama has given one excuse after another why the economy is in the pits. Japanese Earthquake, President Bush and those mean old Oil Companies. The only two reasons he has not blamed was Michelle and their kids. Blames Michelle and he sleeps in the Lincoln Bedroom.

Princeton is a fountain of Lies. I would rely on Nothing said by anyone associated with Princeton, and the same for Anyone Obama appoints to Anything.

Cut Gov spending 30% = More $ available for the private sector = More Jobs.
Now give me Alan Kreuger's salary.
      • Flint 8 months ago
In what world do you see this happening. Government jobs are jobs too. Cut spending 30% then you cut millions of middle class jobs. Meaning less money to spend in the private sector.
      • Common Sense 8 months ago
Flint, Government jobs are non-productive jobs. They do not have a multiplier effect on the economy. Have you ever been to a government office window?. Any business you conduct there takes at least three times as much as a private business. So, yes let's switch for private sector jobs, anytime.

Stop buying imported junk, buy American. More jobs=more tax money. Problem solved.
    • MAO  •  8 months ago
"The hope is Krueger...can help with the President's forthcoming jobs plan..." Obama doesn't have any of his own plan, as always. Krueger will be the next one to be blamed and will soon quit...and Obama will assign a new one again. The one who deserves to quit will never quit, as he always find someone to blame for his failure. SOB!

NO ONE is an expert in everything. I would prefer a President who is a leader, listening to experts for their opinions, then choosing the proper direction to go.

The Obama nation flourishes!!! Two adults live together in government housing, refuse to get married so she can claim head of household and single mother, gets huge tax return even though she doesn't work, she gets welfare, and food stamps, her and the kids get taxpayer funded healthcare, he gets unemployment, food stamps, and they both deal drugs. Annual income $75000 they pay no income taxes. Why would they vote for anyone but Obama? Repubs wants to create jobs for them to work, pay taxes and SUPPORT THEMSELVES. I can hear it now, I'm not getting a job, screw that! The rich should pay more taxes, who do these rich people think they are.

Obama promised a creation of jobs plan.. I just wonder to know if after the plan is released how the stock market will react. I am curious about what type of jobs will be created, if any.
    • duplicipedia  •  8 months ago
alan krueger is one more 'thinker' not a "DO-ER". I am tired of university Professors making decisions about this country and driving it further into the ground. when will obama learn???? get men and women into Government who actually KNOW what they're doing and have a proven track record in the REAL world.

Now obama wants to create jobs?? what happened 3 years ago that prevented him from doing so? and now that we're on the edge of a cliff he thinks he can actually create something like JOBS? he, along with his buddies at the Fed, will only create an expedited worldwide financial collapse!

I heard that Obama's wife has a record number employees in the white house. That is a great start. Our emperor is doing a fine job. When the going gets tough, go on vacation!

Hey, I got an idea. Let's pay MORE people not to work. That'll stimulate the economy!! What a joke!
    • Rick J  •  8 months ago
Hope and change!! Hope and change!! How's that working out for you? I've got a job and plenty of investments so I don't care, but the poor fools who voted for Obama are suffering.

We have been hiring for the last 2 years, it took us that long to get 33 engineers to come work for us. Why? Because we are in Arkansas, people want jobs, as long as they are on THEIR terms, but many jobs cause you to move away, to know new people to experience a different place. It would be nice if jobs just ran out to where you lived and offered you a huge sum of money to do something that came easy to you, but unfortunatly this is real life. Get an education, get flexible, and youll get a job.

I'm sorry but your comment is very one sided. You failed to mention that it might be difficult for a homeowner to sell a house so they could move. Ask me how i know. What is your company offering in the way of job security after someone jumps thru all the hoops to relocate to Arkansas? ask me how i know. I'm a multi-disiplined engineer with many years of experience in Industry and at the University level. Flexible? I moved half way around the world and don't listen to promises anymore.

I do wonder why no one ever mentions the role of the war in this recession. We have nothing to invest in our own recovery because everything is going to Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya. You can see brand new roads and runways in Kabul, along with new power plants. We are hiring local armies and paying off the Taliban and trying to win over the population which means throwing money at the population. Everyone knows it. No one talks about it. Why?
      • Fish head 8 months ago
I talk about it and feel that FedGov can't afford to end the wars right now. The wars should end, but Gov. can't allow it. All of the contractors (KBR, Shaw, Flour, etc.) would be added to the jobless rolls.

Discharged military (veterans) would be unemployed as well.
Many people know about Afghanistan and how we fund(ed) operations there, with bags 'o cash. America's been buying it's way since T.R. built the Panama canal.
      • JOHNF 8 months ago
Actually the wars keep much american industry going, employing thousands of people and we are basically a volunteer army that if the wars were to end would not put more than 100,000 into the unemployment lines considering the millions unemployed that is a drop in the bucket not that I would not feel for them but those are the facts
      • JacquelineS 8 months ago
The contractors could be put to work in America and so could the troops. War is a very inefficient way to employ people. Just the amount spent on fuel alone is staggering. Incomprehensible.

Right wing idiots insist that if we cut government spending that will somehow save the economy. They're too stupid to understand that with the exception of social security almost every dollar the federal government spends is spent to pay someone to do a job. No way to make any significant cuts in government spending without cutting jobs. Much of the federal stimulus was already offset by hundreds of thousands of jobs cut by state and local governments - Right wingers are oblivious to this and most other facts about the economy.
    • moxxie  •  8 months ago
I just have to laugh at the loopy posters who call the Prez. a "socialist". For anyone who already has money, this is a great time (disclaimer: I'm one ). Them that has are getting more and thanks to a very nice low tax rate, hanging on to it, thank you very much America. For everyone else, not pretty. There's a word for this, but it's NOT socialism! Just amazed how few are paying attention.....

Remember the replublicans don't want job growth, how can they win elections if they can't hammer the President on something
    • richardt  •  8 months ago
This will go on for years if the credit markets allow it..more stimulus, a little growth. However the real problems are not being addressed which include Chinese currency manipulation and manufacturing jobs that left the country under the auspices of free trade. We have been sold out by both parties for years and a host of think tanks. More stimulus will just prolong the problem and make the debt worse. WE HAVE TO ROLL UP OUR SLEEVES and produce something.

Have any of you bloggers ever heard of the Military/Industrial complex? Are you too stupid to understand what's wrong? Are you too stupid to care about the looters who are bleeding this country to death?. There's only one solution, clean the rats nest in Washington, but unfortunately I don't think we as a nation have the will or understanding to do this.
