The second largest telecom in the United States has relied on its fast-growing wireless business to offset its quickly disintegrating core home phone business, which saw subscribers shrink by 11% last year. The biggest threat comes from cable companies offering bundles of TV, phone and Internet service. Verizon created its own fiber-optic TV service in 2005 - the "triple play" is offered in select markets and has about 1 million subscribers, far fewer than rivals. One victory: In April, Verizon won an FCC auction for wireless spectrum to build what could be the largest mobile phone network within two years, potentially besting AT&T.
