Alphatec: Lawsuit Loss Creates Buying Opportunity
Mar. 8, 2014 12:48 PM ET | 5 comments | About: ATEC
Disclosure: I am long ATEC. (More...)
Alphatec is cheap and acts in the growing spine surgery segment which is helped both by the aging trend and the obesity trend;
Alphatec got cut in half in the last month due to having lost a lawsuit;
However, the cost from this lawsuit is not final, Alphatec might have ways to avoid taking the loss without compromising most of its business;
And even if Alphatec does take the less, such outcome is also positive due to lower ongoing costs and becoming an attractive acquisition target.
Alphatec (ATEC) is an interesting equity, trading at a significant discount to its competitors in a market segment that's seeing significant growth. It provides devices for spine surgery. Spine surgery is seeing growth brought about by the aging population both in the U.S. and all around the developed world.
For the finer points of what Alphatec does, I'd recommend the article by Andy Batts, "Alphatec: Growth Prospects Suggest The Stock Could Be Significantly Undervalued". In my own article I won't repeat what Andy has already covered. Instead, I will focus on:
The growing market and;
The reason why Alphatec stock got cut in half in the last month.
The growing market opportunity
There are two main factors pushing demand for spine surgery forward:
The aging of the population;
A trend towards obesity (Source for chart: Thinkprogress.org).
No one knows if the company will do stock offering. If they do, it will be a positive news for the stock price in long term and also provide bottom for short term.
what exactly did you mean? you think ATEC will do a stock offering to fund litigation suit? And you think if it announces that news at 1.20 area, it will be good news??? Or ??
I generally agree with you, but as of Friday it failed to break out. Don't be surprised if ATEC tests new lows a while yet. But I agree this has potential to be a $2-3 stock later at the least.
$1.16 and within one year it was up to $6.80......the MM's took this down to exactly the same low as before $1.16.....which is common.......this folks.......is a buying opportunity......this will at the very least double your money.....it won't happen overnight, but I see signs of capitulation here at the bottom.....and it's alos being touted as oversold by a lot of people .....this will go back up.
thanks deerfield! i think all the above and their HF supercomputer can raid this when ever they want. they can't kill the cow they steal milk from or they will starve.
ATEC is rated BUY, based on 4 Wall Street analysts' reports. Analysts have an average $3.57 Target Price on ATEC, implying 178.9% Upside to its current price of $1.28. Undervalue!
Sentiment: Strong Buy
deerfield i wanted you to know i bought more today. i think you will take this down to 1.12 or 1.15 and i will buy enough to put me in the 1.20's. thanks in advance.
Exactly. And furthermore, ATEC is not alone in the case. Orthotec is having a judge against healthpointcapital too for the same issue. They must be also liable for a big part of the $87m. What Les Cross should do now is point out who the hell on the BOD has been taken decisions. We do we have to know from Orthotec that they had been offered many times offers to settle. Why did the BOD reject them? We want the head of those responsible!
