...and I say Astute's hit the nail on the head. The President *is* an idiot under the influence of war-mongers and religious fanatics who have no understanding of the Constitution they're so eager to have others defend. The war in Iraq is a flat-out disaster, the outcome of which will be the creation of an Iranian client-state whose oil reserves will be used to bankroll terrorists everywhere in the Near, Middle and Far East.
That said, how do we get rid of the "golden share"?
There are quite a few different ways to make fertilizer -- the methane hydrates found at the bottom of the oceans is sufficient to last us for many millennia.
Yes, for the record, if all of the arid able land in the US were turned over to production of bio fuels, it still wouldn't completely replace oil. You don't need to however, you just need to cut dependency.
Remember, the car was invented around 1880 but really didn't catch on until after 1910 and only became a staple in the late '20s.
Also, you can get bio fuels from more than sugar and soy -- any long chain bio molecule works -- I'm invested in a Canola bio-diesel plant in Minot, ND.
One thing you probably don't understand very well is that "OIL" is not only gasoline or diesel or heating oil for that matter. While all these new technologies are very promising from technological and environmental point of view harsh reality is that none of them are sustainable at this point. To make biodiesel or ethanol you need to grow soybeans or sugar cane. To grow soy beans you need arable land and fertilizers. Where do you think fertilizers come from? How much spare arable land do we actually have? Hydrogen is great promise but still only a promise. Without going further into all this, my point is there are all this technologies out there but none of them is ready to seriously start taking oil's place in our lives. The world is headed for the most serious energy crisis and to get out of will take an incredible effort by everyone on this planet.
"The National Biodiesel Board (NBB) anticipates 75 million gallons of biodiesel production in 2005. Thats three times the 25 million gallons produced just one year earlier." (http://www.greencarcongress.com/2005/11/us_biodiesel_pr.html)
At a multiple of 3 time a year increase (and it's exponential)...well, do the math. It won't be this year but it will be in the next 10 that it will cut into oil's dominance. Mix this with hydrogen and ethanol technologies and cheap energy is here to stay...
i'm a european and also i think your president is an idiot, the war in IRAK is a matter of oil and the oilbusiness. It has nothing to do with democracie and sadam...
China is a comming worldpower but it will take time and the US is at this moment still Nr1 but with a lot of debt if you compare with the average europe country and its people so i think the economie and its customers live on a tikking debtbomb.Caution is on the hand.
So do you really think that the Iraq people as a whole would be better off with Saddam still in power. People have a desire to be free. Look at the uprisings in China. The only chance we have in the long run is to try and bring democracy to the middle east. Otherwise they will eventually bring us down because they have too many extremists and too much money. Woof.
"but with a lot of debt if you compare with the average europe country and its people "
Probably isn't a good comparison comparing a single EU country against the US. Probably makes more sense to compare the EU against the US...a more equal match.
lead with Iran. We sorted out mess #1. Let Europe have mess #2. And to all the "do gooders" that think the war in Iraq was for oil...You are right!! Dont forget that as you parade around in your fancy clothes and cars, eating foods flown from around the globe, watching flat screen tvs etc....
Time people get real. In a big way.
Good post but don't agree with the oil comment. Oil is important to all the world but the US is becoming less of the biggest consumer.
Agree totally with your view of China.
Buckaroo is cool but what should we call you? (p.s. we are big bmw fans, does that help?)
"the West won the world not by the superiority of its ideas or values or religion but rather by its superiority in applying organized violence. Westerners often forget this fact, non-Westerners never do."

And to think that Reagan's positions held such contempt in the 80's. Who can forget "Voodoo Economics" and then -- seemingly magically -- it work! Then they had to come up with a new name. lol!
Oh, let's not forget the escalation of nuclear arms! Let's see, almost all of Europe was marching against him. What with all of his, well, let me use your words: "The President *is* an idiot under the influence of war-mongers and religious fanatics who have no understanding of the Constitution they're so eager to have others defend. The war in [Substitute Cold War Here] is a flat-out disaster..."
And then he won. Hmmmm, looks like foresight and conviction wins over popularity and appeasement....
