If the Bush Admin. about-face on global warming takes hold and results in any real action, then prices will go beyond firm to rock hard. This was exactly what Enron's motive was to support Kyoto: gas is more efficient, cleaner, and produces less CO2 than coal, and more use of gas will be required to meet or even approach Kyoto goals.
The issue is, of course, completely bogus, the result of a religious-like belief system rather than reality. Most warming in the last 100 years occured before 1940, and most CO2 has been released since (see john-daly.com), and Antarctica is actually cooling significantly, once inland far enough to escape the effect of ocean currents. Hey, but if natural gas prices go through the roof as a result, then I can live with the stupidity.
The CO2 level of the air has gone up about 50%since 1940. The warming effect is probably worth watching. My guess is that lots of carbon presently in coal beds was once in the air. At that time the very level central valley of California was probably forming from a lake bed. I understand that it will take hundreds of years for us to dig up all the coal and burn it.
