Well, I see nothing has changed

I used to be a regular poster here, talking about NSC and its prospects. I got disgusted by the political crap from both extremes. The whining from the left is just as irritating as the blather from the right. No one is going to convince anybody else to change their political position, so let's take it somewhere else and talk about this company!

I'm an insider, so I see a good bit of data about business levels and revenue. It looks pretty good, particularly with the growth in Intermodal and the stirring in the coal fields. We may be on the verge of a real revenue break-out here, IF NSC can ensure equipment and crews to service the business.

If that can happen, NSC can keep the business it's picking up from trucks and our friends at CSX. However, if we fail to deliver on this opportunity, it may not come around again for a long time. FIRE AWAY! -- B-VB

    • Assigned days off mean that I would have to start taking days off when the carrier wants me to and not when I want to and then, if I have to take off for something, I lose even more income. I don't think assigned days off will work in a long pool without a substantial loss of income. I've put up with this for this long, I can put up with it for a few more years.

I haven't noticed the extra boards suffering in my part of the world because of the weekend differential for engineers, there still seems to be the same amount of sickness and ailments that there were before.

How in the world have all of these railroad discussions gotten onto the NS board, I keep thinking I must be looking at the wrong board. ;-]

    • OK, casey, which side of the fence are you on now?

Of course a pissed off trainmaster never sets a banner in a bad curve after you tell him you can't do him that favor and work that assigned rest day because you've made plans with your family. Certainly not, you were just due that test. (What do you mean there's gambling at Rick's? I'm shocked!)

Other than that, we agree. Good post.

    • I have been on both sides of the fence, management and labor.

......Casey you and fritzy are management.
......How does a working man marking off
......caus (sic) you to work YOUR tail off?

CMC does as they are told, callers get short with people they can never get on the phone or who give them a hard time. I have never heard of a trainmaster bannering someone just because they took a contractually guaranteed rest day. Maybe something else caused that trainmaster to have to get the crews attention.
All of the districts I know of that have implemented rest day programs, with the exception of one, love them.

......Have you ever had any of the rest
      ......plans implemented? They fail because
......of Crew Management games. We also
......had the trainmaster BS where if you
......took your rest day when he was short,
......the banner would be in tightest curve
......coming out of the yard on your next
......trip. No I haven't hit one. Ever. Just
      ......childish behavior that subverts the
......intent and makes a lot of us swear we
      ......won't get fooled again.

The company was not going to give engineers anything extra for working the weekends. Noone gets anything extra now. The money that is paid for weekend work was negotiated as a part of the raise with the last contract, ie... engineers received less of an across the board raise in order to get the weekend differential. Both sides got something and gave something up in the process, the union lost out on the across the board raise (the weekend differential will not roll into the basic day at the end of the contract as a standard percentage would have) but negotiated a higher overall payrate for their members. the company agreed to pay out slightly more overall, but gained the incentive for weekend work. It works very well for everyone. If the BLE came up with the idea, good for them. It continues to show they are a foward thinking progressive labor group who understand that the jobs of their members depend on the financial and operational health of their employer.

......With the bonus weekend money, you
......can't hardly get out on weekends in
......my terminal now. What a novel concept
......- pay extra for weekend work! Why did
......it take the BLE to dream it up and why
......did Labor Relations fight it so badly
......when that was their main complaint?

Wow, I did not mean to get so long winded, but there is is. not intended to point fingers or start wars, just the facts as I know them.

    • BULLSHIT,you have the ability to mark off just like anybody else.So dont give us your crap about having to live your life around everybody elses!

    • You made my point for me.

Making a bunch of cash then dissappearing on your schedule screws the rest of us who try to live our lives around the railroad. Forcing me to live around your schedule makes you part of the problem. I would rather have scheduled days off than have to live around your life.

    • " caus the rest of us to have to work our tails off."

Casey you and fritzy are management. How does a working man marking off caus (sic) you to work YOUR tail off?

    • I would be fine with it if the rest days were optional. I prefer to work all I can for 2-3 months and then I hit a burnout phase where I need a day or two to readjust. If I was forced to take rest for 26 or 52 days in the year I would be losing more income than I care to do at this point. As I said, a scheduled optional day would seem fair.

    • Fouled,

NS has been trying hard to implement a rest day program where T&E folks are guaranteed days off on a regular schedule. Our unions (at the local level)have voted on numerous different versions and almost always refused to accept any plan that would give them guaranteed days off. The reason I hear the most is that they do not want to be told when to take their off days, they want to mark off whenever they want to. These same people are the ones who mark off sick every weekend and caus the rest of us to have to work our tails off.

    • Pitteng,

I did not mean to imply that you were bitching in your post. However, I have never seen anything made better by bitching. The only thing it ever does is make those who are doing it very, very bitter and miserable.

    • Thanks, bye the way, I am an ex-clerk, ex-dispatcher,ex-trackman,ex-forktruck op, ex-janitor,ex-manager, ex-ex-ex
      I have been around. RATS
