UP employment

I am considering leaving the aviation industry and applying to Union Pacific which has an opening in Butler, WI for a Locomotive Electronic Technician. Any comments on UP as an employer? The future looks alot brighter for the railroad versus the airline I currently work for. I also would be real interested in communicating with someone who is already working in the capacity of this job opening.

in response to wijetfxr on your 3/7/06 question as to employment with Union Pacific RR. I worked there my entire career, right out of college until a former Union Pacific employee, way back when, it was the best company ever....but then came the MIssouri Pacific merger in '82 and things went downhill from there...Davidson, head of the MoPac mafia, took control some years after the UP/MP/WP merger and he drove the RR into the ground...but, he is no longer involved with day to day operations..still on the UP Board as Chairman of the Board, but Jim Young is now in charge of day to day ops for the Union Pacific...a much better manager than Davidson for sure...

As is consistent with another post responding to your original post for advice on employment, the Railroad will be worlds better than airlines ....the standing joke on the Union Pacific when I was working ( and most probably still is today) is "THe UP makes money in spite of itself." BUt, as the other poster responded, do not hope to have a life other than railroading...plan on working holidays, not getting to take all your vacation, and plan on being under valued as an employee...UP has the best employees working in the rail industry but they treat their employees miserably...but, at least you will be working for a company that will be around...many of the airlines are not anymore...of the four mergers I went through, the UP name stayed on the letterhead through the years...the senior level management team under Davidson was miserable...but Young , hopefully, is setting about to correct that issue and , if nothing else, will much more forward thinking than Davidson who never had an original thought in his life...

Good luck....the UP ,again, has the best rank and file employees in the industry, and hopefully under Young the quality of first level supervisors, General Managers, Superintendents, Assistant Vice Presidents and Vice Presidents will improve drastically over and above what Davidson had in place...

    • I used to work there in corporate. I can tell you that if you work in operations you will be compensated well but be prepared for the time demands. You will get shipped around the system because you will have no seniority v/s the other union employees.

It is definitly more stable than the airlines, and if you are competant you will have a good future there. Good luck.
