    Email from NIH

Colorwonder from the Google board posted this email which is a nice little update:

When do you plan to announce if the Stem Cells submitted by Advanced Cell Tech will be allowed grant money from NIH?
Also when will you announce the decision as to redefining acceptable lines for funding?

    Hello Ms L
The NIH Advisory Committee to the Director will be discussing the ACT submission regarding line MA135 on Thursday, June 4, and will consider making a recommendation to the NIH Director regarding the eligibility of that line for use by NIH-funded researchers at that time. Other submissions from ACT are in various stages of review—in one case, ACT has been asked to provide additional information to NIH and so we are waiting for that information to be submitted.

In several other cases, the ACT lines from pre-blastocyst embryos cannot be reviewed as they do not meet the terms of the current NIH Guidelines. However, we are finishing our analysis of the 1,200 public comments received in response to the proposed change to the NIH Guidelines regarding the definition of “human embryonic stem cell”. We hope to announce a final decision soon—this will be posted on the main NIH stem cell website, If the Guidelines are revised such that the ACT lines from pre-blastocyst embryos meet the a revised definition of “human embryonic stem cell,” those lines will then be reviewed to see if they meet the ethical criteria under
the Guidelines for the informed consent process.

    The hESC Registry team
