MARLBORO — Researchers with an Advanced Cell Technology Inc. joint venture have used human embryonic stem cells to generate blood platelets and say they could do so on a large scale.
The platelet cells the scientists produced functioned like normal platelet cells, according to a report today in the journal Cell Research.
Platelets are blood cells that contribute to clotting. Donors provide platelets for transfusions to patients. Platelets must be stored differently than donated red blood cells, however, and they have a relatively short shelf life.
Money for the work included grants from the National Institutes of Health and University of Illinois institutional start-up funding.

The field seems to be driven by a number of collaborative processes that gets back to a basic question: How is the money made? Be it a partnership, funding source, government sponsored research institution, licensing, patents, institutions of higher learning, or not for profit organizations....it is helpful to understand where revenues will come from. Thanks
