    Reality Check?

Those on this MB who claim ACT(Dr. Lanza) will “cure blindness” are stretching the truth.

ACT’s treatment with hESC will delay or stop the progression of both Stargardt’s macular dystrophy, Dry AMD. It will not reverse the disease. The treatment is a damage control. Early indications for these diseases are the key to attain maximum use of the treatment if the trials go well (and they will).

    • The FDA frowns upon overstating claims, especially when one can't predict the percentage liklihood. The reality is, no matter how many times you quote the doctors, you will prove only that everyone is stating the conclusions of tests, which were very narrowly focused, in order to stay within the lines set-out by regulations and the regulatory agency in charge. There is no way to conclude that it WON'T CURE BLINDNESS, anymore than there is a way to say that it will CURE persons already blind. We don't know that. We don't even know if the human trials will succeed, though the animal trials give us some excellent indications that they will.

However, this thread, as much as it seeks to be a "reality check" is just us unreal as any other claims. It's based upon faulty notions of careful wording being proof that the treatment will not cure some patient's blindness, and this is simply something we won't know, until someone who was actually blind says, "I'm starting to see something!"

    • I see said the blind carpenter to his seeing dog as he picked up a hammer and saw.

    • Shugha..

It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt!!!

It’s the death of these RPE cells that leads to a variety of retinal disease, the biggest of which is dry age-related macular degeneration,” ACT Chief Executive Gary Rabin said.

In the upcoming trials, eye surgeons will inject the new cells into patients’ diseased eyes with the aim of having the cells graft and reverse the damage in an area of the body known for being insulated from typical immune responses that would reject the new cells, he said.

      • okey dockey.... now eat this:

Edmund Mickunas, vice president of Advanced Cell Technology’s regulatory division, said in an interview with Ocular Surgery News

        Stargardt’s macular dystrophy

“We are trying to delay or stop the progression of the damage to the point where the patient’s photoreceptors will remain,” Mr. Mickunas said.

        Dry AMD

“The RPE cells can, in fact, help support the health of the retinal cells,” Mr. Mickunas said. “We are hoping ultimately that we can at least retard that progression of the disease or perhaps stop it altogether.”

Heck..if they've seen preclinical animal studies showing "improved visual function with no adverse effects" (do not know what that means), more power to them. It'll be a great plus.
