Officials: 80 Percent Of Recent NYC High School Graduates Cannot Read

To Combat Problem, CUNY Starts Low-Cost Immersion Remedial Program

    March 7, 2013 6:16 PM

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — It’s an education bombshell.

Nearly 80 percent of New York City high school graduates need to relearn basic skills before they can enter the City University’s community college system.

The number of kids behind the 8-ball is the highest in years, CBS 2′s Marcia Kramer reported Thursday.

When they graduated from city high schools, students in a special remedial program at the Borough of Manhattan Community College couldn’t make the grade.

They had to re-learn basic skills — reading, writing and math — first before they could begin college courses.

    • Two questions:

What in the heck does NYC's public school system have to do with ACTC?

From where, pray tell, do you make the connection between an apparently failing/under performing school system and union teachers?

    • So what are our kids learning or being taught up to when they "graduate".

This is the BEST argument to date for the voucher school system. Progressives and their teachers union goons have absolutely no interest in our kids education or their success in life. They are cultivating functional illiterates and useful idiots for their dream utopia......

Shouldn't the state of New York and the rest of America demand a REFUND for defective education they've been paying for?......this is theft and fraud. But what's new, liars are dishonest and have no problems stealing from our kids and We the people.

      • Who are the "union goons"? Is it the kindergarten teacher or the fifth grade teacher in the school district. What a joke! The teachers are made up of the good people in our community. I'm sick of reading this garbage. We entrust our kids to these people, yet we feel the need to bash. Teachers are the most educated in the history of our country. Take a look at our family dynamics. Broken homes, abuse, drug and alcohol abuse, lack of respect, and lack of concern for pushing kids to do their best is the issue. Our schools can only do so much with what they get. In many cases, they are not only teaching but raising our kids today. Wake up!

    • Typically, the school system in most states is horrible,, kids are not learning and like I said before, It is daycare,, I think a incentive system that gives kids a desire for the future might work,, throwing more moeny at it is not going to do a dam thing,,

      • First, you're an idiot. Our schools are a reflection of the emphasis our society, and more specifically the parents of the students put on education. With idiots that bash teachers and education in general with no idea of what they are talking about, that's why we are in the position we are right now in our country. Show me a good, hardworking, family that cares about their children and their education, and I will show you someone that is excelling in school. Quit being a part of the problem, and try to be someone that is part of the solution!
