Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Monday announced that her government would set up a Stem Cell Research Centre for animals in the state.
Announcing the decision in the Assembly, Jayalalithaa said that the Stem Cell Research Centre would be set up by the Tamil Nadu Veterinary & Animal Sciences University at a cost of Rs 6.48 crore.
The Centre would function in cooperation with Michigan State University, Wakeforest Institute of Regenerative Medicine and Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine.
The planned first-of-its-kind Stem Cell Research Centre will function from Madhavaram campus of the Tamil Nadu Veterinary & Animal Sciences University.
The CM also announced a slew of schemes to provide a boost to agricultural production in the state.
The schemes, which will be implemented at a cost Rs 984.70 crore, include a Sustainable Sugarcane Initiative that will be implemented on fifty thousand acres of farm land through sugar mills. It will cost the state exchequer Rs 275.20 crore.
Around Rs 125 crore will be allocated during the current year to mechanize agriculture, while another Rs 112.49 crore will be allocated to create a special purpose vehicle to provide faremers with quality inputs.
