Thank God and PT Barnum for global warming or this might have been much worse.

State officials said at least 10,000 to 20,000 cows were killed due to the cold and snow.

    Story Highlights
Up to 4 feet of snow fell in the Black Hills area last weekend.
Western South Dakota lost at least 5 percent of its cattle.
Federal government shutdown is preventing ranchers from requesting help.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — Western South Dakota ranchers are reeling from the loss of tens of thousands of cattle in last weekend's blizzard, and many will dispose of carcasses in pits set to open Monday.

Rancher Heath Ferguson said the storm killed 96 percent of his herd of 100 black Angus and Limousin cattle, a hit worth about $250,000. He said total losses topped more than 1,000 head, as six other herds were roaming the family's 16,000 acres east of Sturgis.

Up to 4 feet of snow fell in the Black Hills area last weekend. Reports of 20 or more inches of snow were common, and 21½ inches in Rapid City were a record for both a 24-hour period in October and the entire month. At least two deaths were attributed to the storm, and it took a particularly heavy toll on livestock.

    • Conservatives Once Again Cite Extreme Cold To Deny Climate Change
      Blog ››› January 11, 2013 5:24 PM EST ››› THOMAS BISHOP

After ignoring reports that 2012 was the hottest year on record in the U.S., Rush Limbaugh and Fox Business host Stuart Varney tried to push back against well-established evidence of climate change by citing instances of cold weather.

On the January 11 edition of his radio show, Limbaugh said, "Twenty-seven degrees outside San Diego right now, 27 degrees, and they're talking about global warming" :

Similarly, Varney cited examples of "snow in Jerusalem" and "a deep freeze in China and in Europe," then said that "the green is demanding a carbon tax to prevent global warming." Varney added, "Climate's always changing, isn't it?"

In addition to the fact that scientists have found enormous evidence of climate change and the human causes behind it, the existence of cold weather does not disprove global warming. Despite the right-wing media regularly claiming that cold or snowy weather is evidence that global warming isn't happening, climate scientists -- including at least one who has disputed aspects of the scientific consensus on global warming -- reject the notion that a short-term change in weather, let alone an individual storm, can prove or disprove the existence of manmade climate change.

The National Climate Data Center reported this week that 2012 was the warmest and second most extreme year on record for the contiguous U.S. Fox News largely ignored the story, which runs contrary to its narrative of denying climate change. When liberal-leaning Fox co-host Bob Beckel made the channel's first reference to the record heat, fellow co-host Greg Gutfeld shouted him down.

    • gee, I didn't see this in the news...

    • In another clear sign of global warming, the AVERAGE temperature has changed 1 degree Fahrenheit during the last 100 year period. An average which changes everyday, in all parts of the world, during all types and ranges of climate. Common Sense states that climate is the DEFINITION of change, but this fact has been covered up by the right wing media who wants to continue leaving progressive blind sheep in the dark while they share power.

      • Right wing media, do you mean like ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC and the like? They all like robots proclaim there really is global warming.

        There are other opinions:

A leaked report to the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) shows that there has been a 60 percent increase in the amount of ocean covered with ice compared to this time last year.

According to The Telegraph, the report shows an unbroken ice sheet more than half the size of Europe that stretches from the Canadian islands to Russia's northern shores.

The report has led some scientists to claim that the world may be heading for a period of cooling that will not end until the middle of this century, which would contradict computer forecasts of imminent catastrophic warming. Long term cycles in ocean temperature suggest the world may be approaching a period similar to that from 1965 to 1975, when there was a clear cooling trend and some scientists predicted an imminent ice age.

Several sources have been quick to declare this a "huge loss" for science and a victory for those who question or deny climate change.

        Investor's Business Daily proclaimed:

"Yes, that's right. The dire predictions of an iceless Arctic made in 2007 were wrong, just as the fearful projections of an increase in global-warming-caused disastrous storms have also been off the mark in a missed-by-the-width-of-the-universe sort of way...
The bureaucrats who run [The IPCC] will find some way to keep it going, though it's of no use. It will happen in much the same way the International Monetary Fund has been able to perpetuate its existence long after it should have been shut down.

In other words, the IPCC will deal with the reality as it always has, which is to say it will continue denying it."

I could also give you a Harvard (hardly a right wing institution) study that casts doubt on the global warming hysteria.

    • If the cattle froze to death Lonesome wouldn't we have a over abundance of fresh beef on the market?if true beef prices should come down slightly with less demand looks like the north west should be eating quite well for the winter months.

    • Was that HOT snow that cooked those cows dead?...hehehehehehe. Ya jes can't hide da TRUTH, plain and simple! It is so HOT here in Montana, I am shivering and spilling my hot cocoa....hehehehehehehe

    • you are so ill informed its amazing you have such strong opinions. I would think since you obviously don't care much for details or expert opinion you would know enough not to form strong opinions.

Try not to let politicians guide your worldview so much.
