    How stupid is this?

Like most folks, I was off today (New Years day). I had just eaten at a nearby sub shop and I decided to stop next door at Big Lots to pick up a few things I needed including a greeting card (a sympathy card for a friend who's husband passed away today), a multi-pack of toothbrushes, and a calendar. I also picked up an orthopedic dog bed while I was there that was priced at $25. When I got towards the front of the store, I saw that the line was six to eight deep. I wasn't surprised. Long lines are not at all unusual at Big Lots. I waited three or four minutes and then placed my selections on a display and walked out. Any other store opens a second or third checkout line when things get busy but not Big Lots. Big Lots lost out on a sale totaling about $42. (Yes, I know Big Lots isn't going to miss my sale.)

The other loss Big Lots encountered was me as a customer. It'll no longer matter that they have several locations near where I live, work, and eat. It's not worth my time to pick out items for purchase only to find that I have a five to ten minute wait facing me for checkout. Big Lots is on my no-shopping list. (Yes, I know they're not going to miss me much as a shopper.) While I represent one and only one shopper, I wonder how many other people have gotten as fed up as I am. Lest you think this is a staffing / managerial problem limited to one particular store, I'll tell you it's not. There are about three Big Lots stores I used to frequent regularly but no more. My time is valuable and my patience is limited. I hope BIG upper management realizes the very real costs of their systematic short staffing before they drive themselves out of business. It's so stupid to waste time stocking a store only to frustrate your shoppers when they want to pay you for your goods.
