    • Ha, Phil!

I jus' got back from visitin'
are new Big Lots store in Lickspittle, WV. Ah had my
lis' and knowed what ah wanted, but
      they didn't
have none of the stuff ah was a lookin' fer.
      They
wasn't no corncob pipes, nor coal figurines, nor
      moonshine,
nor still supplies, nor possum grits, nor ramps, nor
      mountain
oysters, nor nuthin'. They was a lot of purty stuff that
      looked
like it come from Californy or sumthin'. They wasn't
      nuthin'
for us Hillbillys and Yankees. A gurl there
      said their business
was way off, but they couldn't
      figure out why.
Ah don' know either. Ah am still
tryin' to figure out what shoes
      an toilet tissue is
      for.

    • Judiandal:

      No one ever said retail
management was easy. I disagree with you
      about the low
pay. I think Consolidated pays very well based
      on
the volume of the stores and compared to the retail
      industry in
general. As to the rest of your comments, I
      do not disagree.
      Management is expected to jump
in and pick up the slack entirely
      too much. The
60 hour or more work weeks you describe are
      the
norm. As for a personal life outside the store - forget
      it.
I think the thing that disturbs me the most is the
      attitude
toward us. A few years ago Bill Kelley stood
      up at a managers
meeting and joked that we are
      the misfits and rejects of
      retail and that our
company had to succeed because we had nowhere
      else to
go. I think they beleive that. And they treat us
      like
they beleive. Take it because where else can you
      go.

My point in the repost of the message, was that we
      need to stop
using this forum for complaining. But
      in answering your message,
      I just busted my own
position. Closeout retail is driving us
      all nuts.

    • dont forget the stores in Chittlins Gulch and East Onetooth. OL/BL's there are just not stocking enough fatback, squirrel root and chewing tobacco. Dag burn it.

    • It's good to talk about Biglots here so investors
will know the truth about what companies they
      purchase.
They pay their employees low wages, the
benefits are lousy and the way employees are treated is
bad. The stores all have a low morale.
      the
merchandise piles in the back rooms and the 48 hour rule is
      unreasonable .
I wonder how many investors in this company
would like to work 60 and 70 hour work weeks. and for
      low wages .
      I'm glad i got out .
      there is
more to life then big lots... and there are a lot of
other companies looking for employees and management
      people.
      I remember the
      Perception is Reality ...
      and attitude is everything ..
      but it's hard to
have a positive outlook on lifw when your life
consists of 60 hours of Big lots a week .
      Big lots
needs to treat their employees better .. and they would
get more work out of them . and the employees would
be happy about where they work and take pride in
their stores .. if they were allowed to work 45 hours a
week and still have a life outside of biglots ..

    • THIS IS A REPOST OF MESSAGE BY YQUEM1 FROM
      1/29/99. I THINK
      EVERYONE NEEDS TO READ IT
      AGAIN.

You are your own worst enemies...

We are institutional investors who follow and are
long this stock as well as
      read this message
board. Your reply to ekopwols98 is redolent of both

arrogance and ignorance. Anyone reading this board from the
      beginning could
rightly conclude that the Big Lots and
      Odd Lots managers are semi-literate,
      obnoxious
buffoons who have nothing better to do than to sexually
      harass their
      female employees, thump their chests
about how Consolidated is better than
      MacFrugals,
ridicule the implementation of planagrams, complain
      about
merchandise flow, their District Managers, Human
      Resources, Asset Protection
      and the television ad
campaign, proclaim that Bill Kelley is God or the

      Antichrist, etc., etc., ad nauseum.

      Of the many
boards we monitor, this is the ONLY one where the
      postings
consist solely of disgruntled (?) employees
      washing their company's dirty
      laundry in public. You
fools don't realize that your "Dear Abby" message
      board
sends decidedly negative vibes to any potential
      individual and institutional
      investors because it fails
to present any semblance of a balanced picture of
      your
      company.

Why do you think that there no
lively exchange of information regarding the

prospects of CNS stock on this board? No self-respecting
      investor will post on
      this board because of responses
      just like yours, Interferonius.

      Where are all
the other thousands of CNS store managers who believe
      in and
embrace the values of the company? They
are probably trying to make the most
      of a
difficult retail environment with the tools they have,
      instead of spending
      their time complaining about what
      they don't have.

      With the exception of the
problems with Intrepid, the complaints that fill this

forum are not pervasive throughout CNS, and they are
      not institutionalized
      within CNS, in fact, they
are the sorts of problems - payroll hours, freight
      flow,
employee relations - that competent retail
      managers struggle with and defeat
      daily without
"crying in their beer" in forums like these.

      Grow
up! If you want to run an "advice to the workworn"
      column for
      disgruntled CNS store managers, start
your own web site. Until then, use this
      site for
the purpose it was designed - the exchange of
      information RELEVANT
to the performance of the stock,
issues like problems with Intrepid and their
      impact
on sales, discussions regarding why the company will
      or will not make
      sales and profit plan, etc.

Consider the impact you "nattering Nabobs of
      negativism" have on the
      perception that others develop of
YOUR company before you post. Remember
      that
"Perception is Reality" and "Attitude is Everything."

    • WELL stated, sir. 48 hours is indeed a goal, but
we all are realistic enough to recognize that
Thurs-Fri truck stores may not be able to meet this goal
w/o a 1-2 day time lag. As long as the freight hits
the floor before the next shipment, and is
merchandised properly, any reasonable DM will be completely
      satisfied with your performance.
      Our regular customers
are attuned to when to shop our individual stores to
find the new goods, regardless of what that day may be
      in our individual stores.

    • Truck processing in 48 hrs is a good focus point
to remind one how important getting the freight to
the floor is, but, it is
      only a goal.... Like any
goal it needs a good dose of
      realistic
expectations, but I assure you that if you keep your store

truck to truck on a week by week basis, you will hear
      very little
recrimination and will have a very
      successful store.

What you must remember is that Don
      Mierzwa must motivate stores
      to really begin to show
our customers a FULL, CLEAN, ready to
      DO BUSINESS
store that will begin to win our customer base
      back.
If your DM is this rigid, he needs to get the
      blinders off and
run his business. I guarantee you that
      no one in the company
      has the intention to drive
away those full timers that are the
      backbone to our
success. Keep your store truck to truck, promote
      sales,
give good service, and be profit driven and if your
      DM
starts hurling threats...... call Mierzwa and you will
      have his support.
      The store is YOUR store.......
      manage it.

    • I have a similar experience. My store receives
trucks on Fridays. My DM also said that my freight had
to be totally processed within 48 hours. Can't do
it. My full timers nearly revolted. Sometimes you
have to ignore what the DM is wanting (his directions
are coming from Don M). I try to put a realistic spin
on the situation. When I unload the truck on Friday
I do my best to make sure the hot items are
processed first, that way I don't cause lost sales. I
always make sure that I am clean in the backroom before
my next truck. If you are really frustrated, call
Brad Waite and ask him how he thinks you should handle
it. We cannot afford to lose the full time
      associates.

    • Bring your happy dedicated a$$ to my store & try
      to convince
5 full timers that has been with the
      company for 12 years that
      working every Saturday is
good for them & the company. It's
      easier said than
done. If I received a truck on Monday, Tuesday,
      or
Wednesday, there wouldn't be any problems. I wouldn't want
to work every Saturday & I'm sure you wouldn't want
to either. I get a truck on Thursday & sometimes a
2nd on Friday. DM's think the truck comes in already
unloaded. It takes 50 man hours to unload & price a truck.
that's not figured into payroll. I am truck to truck
every week. I made 40000+ in January, 400000 for the
year. What is 48 hour stocking going to do for me? I
here that there are stores sitting on 15 skids of L&G
in the WH. That's 3 trucks worth. I think the higher
ups should meet with the full timers & explain to
them personnally that they need to work every Saturday
or find a new job. That's what I've been directed to
do. My Regional came in & ask if I was truck to
truck, & I said of course. He replies "As long as your T
to T I'm Happy, This 48 hour thing is going to be
      tough".

I've about had it with the 48 hour Bullsht.
