Use of ethanol helps reduce dependance on foreign oil, in particular opec oil. This also helps keep oil a bit lower priced by lessening demand. I notice a lobby group called growth energy, is headed by Retired General W. Clark. Of course as a lobby group it has an agenda and bias but the arguments make sense. One has to be aware that a lot of the worlds oil reserves are under the control of governments not always friendly to North America and the supply line is always at risk. Ethanol does provide an insurance and a necessary addtion to auto fuel in the event that shipping lines are disturbed by conflict, but far greater is the potential loss of access to the oil fields due to conflict or nationalization. I think this is one of the major reasons why the governments of US and Canada are supporting ethanol and biofuels.
