    Oregon considering 'clean fuel' rules; critics say gas prices would rise

    Oregon's Environmental Quality Commission gets to deal with two hot-button issues --global warming and gas prices -- in one package today, as commissioners take their first swing at setting new rules for "clean fuels."

    Authorized by the 2009 Legislature, the clean fuel standards would require suppliers and distributors to cut the carbon in car and truck fuels 10 percent a gallon by 2025.

    Supporters include the Oregon Environmental Council, the state's ethanol and biodiesel producers and the Oregon chapter of the American Lung Association. They say the program would foster home-grown biofuels, reduce dependence on foreign oil and address climate change.
