Mossberg says very well-placed sources at Apple tell him Jobs plans to be an “active” chairman and to continue to be involved in Apple product design.
Steve has already set the product roadmap for at least 2-3 years from now, if not more - they just don't get together and decide to introduce a product on a whim without thinking and planning on where it will be going to be in the future. Apple has been a leader and the rest o the world has tried to follow and catchup and emulate their products. They are steps ahead of the competition. Just because Steve will not be the CEO it doesn't mean all bets are off. In fact, the current management are not that stupid to run the company to ground, it is not to their interest. Would you ruin your livelihood if you were part of the management or even an employee?
