It wasn't just apple that sold off. Look at overall market. Dow, S&P. Sometimes when you look for rational explanations they are not available when irrationality is not considered an explanation.
Did you get the answer from all the people replied? igf not here is the answere..people have no idea why? they just buy and sell regardless of what companies are doing. Don't hate the game hate the players.
It is very simple/ Apple and Google are two of the biggest most visible growth stocks in history. They are very closely connected in many ways but most of all in investors minds. If GOOG can miss then in the minds of many so can AAPL.
On another note if AAPL does not kill it next week we may see the same thing. Tough call here. I have watched this many times am always so conflicted. Timing AAPL is a big boy game and I do not have the stomach to do it.
For better or for worse or for whatever,we live in an investment world of "sell and ask questions later". The thought process being "what ever happened to GOOG could happen to AAPL". And so it goes. The fact is (ex GOOG) that AAPL's stock performance has been poor since Intro day. That alone has spooked the players. And now this. Per GOOG? Every Fast Money pumper and also Cramer looooooved GOOG. Now what do they say? Buy more? With what? The endless amount of money to play with that they think everyone has? :) After this GOOG fiasco, now AAPL becomes even more suspect going into earnings. Human nature dictates that. I do suspect that AAPL's "upside" from here - at least near term - is very limited on that premise. AAPL now has no room for any kind of less that spectacular report. I'm not saying that that is fair, but it is the reality of the AAPL universe.
