Strong demand prompts Apple suppliers to work during Chinese New Year
By Mikey Campbell
Two of Apple's Chinese manufacturing partners are said to be foregoing a traditional work stoppage during the important Chinese New Year in a bid to meet ongoing high demand for the iPhone 5 and iPad mini.
Details regarding the work schedule change are scarce, but Taiwan's United Daily News (via Brightwire) claims that Hon Hai Precision Industries and Flexium Interconnect will keep certain production lines open during the Chinese New Year to keep up with demand for Apple's newest iDevices. For 2013, China's most important holiday will start on Feb. 10.
According to the publication, Hon Hai, better known as Foxconn, will be operating a number of iPhone and iPad mini assembly lines, while Flexium will keep its factory in Kunshan, Jiangsu Province staffed with "a large number" of trained student workers.
If true, the work continuation will mirror an identical decision made in 2011 by Apple manufacturing partner Pegatron, which reportedly offered employees triple pay to work over the Chinese New Year. No such bump in pay has been reported for 2013.
A move to keep production facilities online during the holiday would be an indication that supply is just barely meeting demand, as evidenced by the U.S. Apple Online Store's one-week wait time for all iPad mini models. As for the the iPhone 5, Apple proceeded with its most ambitious rollout ever and debuted the handset in its 101st market, the Caribbean island of St. Kitts, on Thursday. As pointed out by Fortune's Philip Elmer-Dewitt, the latest launch received little fanfare from press outlets.
TOMORROW'S FRONT PAGE WSJ NEWS
today's news from the china times tells you that just maybe the cycle orders for the i5 have been scaled back. You know, maybe exactly on AAPL's manufacturing quantity plan and about like this: 45m for Dec Q, 55m for March Q and now say "only" (LOL) 30m i5 for the June and Sep quarters.
Suppliers: Apple to Announce iPhone 5S and iPhone Math by End of June
Source (Chinese): China Times - about 13 hours ago
Apple will announce three new iPhone models in 2013, and two of them, the 4-inch iPhone 5S and 4.8-inch iPhone Math (both featuring 8-mega-pixel cameras), will hit markets before the end of June, China Times reported citing Taiwan-based Commercial Times.
Citing Apple's suppliers, the report added that the third model, which has not been exposed, will be launched before Christmas. The model will feature a 12-mega-pixel camera.
The shipments for components, including touchscreens and cameras, will start rising significantly in March, and iPhone manufacturers will begin production in late April. Hence, Apple's suppliers will see major growth in 2Q 2013.
Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. Ltd. will undertake 90% of the manufacturing orders, and Largan has received orders for 8 million camera lenses. Fujikura, Flexium and Zhen Ding will share production orders for printed circuit boards.
Foxconn Technology and Coxon will provide molding parts for Apple's new models; Foxlink will continue to offer connectors; Hon Hai Precision's Microelectronics Technology will start designing 4G network solutions for Apple.
Moreover, the report said Apple will launch iTV before the end of 2013, and the company is set to unveil seven to eight new products in the year.

Notice the short gumps have nothing to say on real threads? LOL Read this if you missed longs! AAPL is cranking out product like hot cakes -- can't make em fast enough for Asia or here.
correct... FOXCONN has told them they are working or fired... and while the bleeding hearts wail with their countless items made in china about the house, AAPL is paying FOXCONN workers twice whatany other company does in china, thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, etc.
Notice that this is actually news: the iPhone 5 production lines at FOXCONN confirm they will be working through the chinese holiday to meet what Tim Cook has termed "incredible demand" for the iPhone 5.
Let's add to that the highest estimates seen for TOTAL iphone sales is up around 55m phones for the December Q, traditionally AAPL best phone sales Q. It is likely say 40m of that total was i5, and so now that yileds are improving, multiple sources are available for the glass, defects have tailed off on learning curve effects, and, likely, parts costs are moderating along with other margin benefits, WSJ reports unconfirmed drops in orders to where they are going from parts for 65m iphone 5 for the March quarter to just 52m iphone 5 parts?
None of that is internally consistent unless iPhone 5 demand continues to be "incredible" on the high side!
Compare that tpo the WSJ "fake news" that demand concerns have them lowering production.
$600 in 9 days... but Tim should certainly wave his hand again... a simple "everything is going exceedingly well and we also want to clarify that our revenue and earnings guidance will be smashed for the quarter on the continuing incredible demand we are seeing for the iphone 5.
