Jony Ives is exactly where he wants to be - in charge of creating the best products in the world. He sees all the #$%$ Cook has to put up with on a daily basis, and I'm sure he's perfectly happy in the background. Besides, if Ives would take the helm, he couldn't do both the designing and the CEO duties. Keep in mind, Jobs wanted a mechanical keyboard on the original IPad - but Ives didn't want one; Jobs finally relented and went with Ives' design. You better believe that Cook has a huge amount of respect for Ives, and Ives know the power he himself holds in that company - you don't have to be CEO to realize you have the best job in the world!
people love to bash Cook.... Fact is, he has been operating this company for a long time..... One of the big reasons AAPL has all this cash, the guy has operated the company pretty much as good as anyone could expect...... Cook ran and operated this company well before Jobs death and even during the trying times when Jobs was working, not working, in charge, not in charge....... Cook hasn't done anything to deserve the thumping. The stock got too popular, too many people owned it and there weren't enough new buyers, well that all changed in just 3 months and now you have the exact opposite. Too many people sold it, too many people bashed it, now a lot of people are going to want back into it..... So goes Wall Street, so goes the stock market.
