Apple until now never included channel fill in their numbers (means phones sold to carriers and not delivered to customers) that could be the reason why ,all analysts were far off the target. That could also be the reason why we are not jumping abvove 500 today and why there was only a muted response from the analysts. I read about this in an article from Barrons. Constructive bashing is very welcome.
Munster was saying the 5M last year did not include the channel number of "previous phone", namely 4s or 4. But this year's 9M includes everything going into the channel, because apple discontinued the 5 and replaced it with 5C, and the 9M includes this 5C number, so it's not a apple vs apple. But if you take step back and ask, so what's the 4/4s number apple filled the channel last year during that launch weekend? given it's the new phone launch week, it would be reasonable most phone sold/filled into the channel would be the new/latest iphne5, let's give it the average 1M (apple sold average 1M every 3 days), we are still talking about 9M vs 6M...I don't think Munster did not know that, he was just spinning the number to fool the people on TV, that was disgusting and dishonest.
that actually is not a true statement. apple did include channel fill in previous numbers, but the analysts are saying that last year most of those phones sold through immediately and this year the 5C did not fill out. i would not at all doubt this helped to stoke the numbers, but the lame excuses are just stacking up for why wall street has no clue about apple.
