Child dies from flu in Maine

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — An early-arriving flu season has claimed the life of a healthy youngster for the first time in years in Maine, officials said Tuesday, prompting pleas for people to get vaccinations.
The victim was an otherwise healthy elementary school-aged child in central Maine, a heartbreaking case that flies in the face of the perception that influenza is a disease that kills only the elderly and the frail, said Dr. Sheila Pinette, director of the Maine Center for Disease Control & Prevention.
"It's a tragedy and we're really saddened by it. It highlights the need for people to get immunized," Pinette said.
Authorities declined to provide any further details on the child who died.
In Maine, influenza was documented before Halloween, far earlier than usual. In a typical year, the flu doesn't arrive until late November or early December, Pinette said.
So far, nursing homes, schools and day care centers have had 18 major outbreaks, which are required to be reported to state health officials, she said.

    • Real question is what level of hospitalizations of children and others with chronic conditions will occur this flu season, and level of pediatric risk which would justify use of better antivirals.
Pediatric mortality was 09-282, 10-122, 11-34, so far this year, 6 vs. 1 at this time in 11. 6x34=204. If its150 possible children plus pregnant women and others with risk factors, pressure would be on
FDA/CDC to explain why they did not make use of best antivirals.

      From cdc/flu/weekly
Between October 1, 2012 and December 8, 2012, 677 laboratory-confirmed influenza-associated hospitalizations were reported. This is a rate of 2.4 per 100,000 population. Among all hospitalizations, 524 (77.4%) were associated with influenza A and 145 (21.4%) with influenza B. There was no virus type information for 7 (1.0%) hospitalizations. Among hospitalizations with influenza A subtype information, 123 (96.9%) were attributed to H3 and 4 (3.1%) were attributed to 2009 H1N1. The most commonly reported underlying medical conditions among hospitalized adults were metabolic conditions, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and chronic lung disease (excluding asthma). Among 15 hospitalized women of childbearing age (15-44 years), four were pregnant. The most commonly reported underlying medical conditions in hospitalized children were asthma, cardiovascular disease, immune suppression and neurologic disorders. Forty percent of hospitalized children had no identified underlying medical conditions.

      • Latest CDC update shows flu trending just below epidemic level of 7%, 2 more pediatric deaths, total now 8, before flu season started last year after Jan 1. What is FDA waiting for when an IV antiviral is available? So far flu widespread in South-Texas to Georgia. Has not hit yet in Midwest but spreading rapidly.
        See CDC Fluview for Friday.
Pneumonia and Influenza (P&I) Mortality Surveillance:
During week 50, 6.7% of all deaths reported through the 122 Cities Mortality Reporting System were due to P&I. This percentage was below the epidemic threshold of 7.0% for week 50.
