The left claims it was never intended for the people to have weapons used in the military, yet they miss the fact that when the 2nd Amendment was written, the people had total parody with the government via the standard musket.
Dont think the average citizen had a cannon though. The Taliban has shown what can be done with simple weapons like AKs vrs superior forces. Think if it came down to a revolution here the military would side with the people.
The poll a few years back at 29 Palms says different, maybe 50% would follow illegitimate orders. My kid was a jarhead and I asked him to poll those at his duty station. He came back to me with about the same ratio. But that said, it doesn't get right down to the nut cuttin' does it?
And it was the intent of the founders that the American people be as well armed as any standing army. The reason for that was that there was to be no standing army here as they had just experienced the abuses of such a force. Read the Constitution; it does provide for a standing navy, but does not provide for a standing army.
The first successful breach of the people's rights was the unconstitutional National Firearms Act of 1934. There is NO AUTHORITY GIVEN for federal meddling/interference with weaponry possessed by the people.
If you want to read the appalling story behind the National Firearms Act of 1934, read the book "Unintended Consequences" by John Ross.
