As Apple Inc. (AAPL) prepares to unveil both a new high-end iPhone and a cheaper version for the first time next week, it is already working on something bigger.
The electronics company has begun evaluating a plan to offer iPhones with screens ranging from 4.8 inches to as high as 6 inches, people familiar with the matter say. That would be a sizable leap from the 4-inch screen of the iPhone 5 released last year, and, at the upper end, would be one of the largest on the market.
This is exactly why I want the watch category to take over the smartphones with Google Glasses acting as the display. I like larger screens but don't want to carry one around.
And, I put my money where my feelings are in that I own HIMX (see their past two days trading over 25 and then 38 million shares and going up 13% and 17%). Google bought an equity stake and HIMX will supply the LCoS chips for the Google Glasses (but HIMX did $737 million and earned $0.30/share in 2012 without this business so they are solid reporting around $0.20 in the first half of 2013...........and just paid a $0.25/share dividend in July.
I also own shares in here and with TQNT who makes amps/radios/filters for communications. But, it is their ability to integrate their BAW/SAW filters (only AVGO can match them for filters) with the radio amps/receivers which will help TQNT win big.
But, the Google Glasses will greatly defuse the cell phone screen size wars and save much money on them. They will also shrink them so perhaps a watch is all that is needed.
You can call me shadow since I followed you into this one after the lead on HIMX. Been a few weeks since I thanked you last and today was a big day, so thanks again. You have made some damn good picks. Count me as a fan and sign me up for your newsletter.
