This is old but I thought it was relevant. I didn't know FTWR's 24-39ghz spectrum was acquired from BK.....ART about 5 years ago! The reason I posted this is because:
NO ONE on this board in the last 7 months has stated the benefits of 24-39ghz spectrum....!
Can ANYONE clearly and intelligently explain why VZ, T, S, or any other entity would/could benefit from owning 24-39ghz? This is my main concern.....it doesn't appear that this frequency is heavily sought after!!?? What's up with it??
This spectrum is used for fixed point to point microwave. The advantages on backhaul, it can carry 1gig of bandwidth. Based on FTWR’s press releases, Dragonwave and Bridgewave and made an Ethernet radio specifically for this spectrum. Why would this coveted for S, VZ, T or ATT? First, carriers need cell backhaul, but they hate to give money to their competitors. I know ATT and VZ has to use their incumbent in their territory. Fiber is the preference, but you can’t get fiber everywhere. The rub for FTWR is that the spectrum they own is relatively good at short distances, 1- 2 miles, where most of the fiber is in the ground. My company, ATT likes to dive into microwave, but always stumble when we do it ourselves. We use unlicensed spectrum, and the reliability is not as great. This poses a problem when delivering higher bandwidth.
Spectrum can not be 'created' so there is a limited supply. I think of FTWR's spectrum as a bridge or bulk that assists the 'more desired and defined' spectrum to areas it could not reach otherwise. Hence our DRWI partnership with 'Avenue'

DragonWave, FiberTower Partner to Bring Bundled Microcellular Solutions
8:05a ET October 25, 2011 (Market Wire)
The burgeoning need for high-capacity data traffic to meet this growth within dense, complex urban areas has become a key motivator for microcellular deployments and is driving innovation in network development initiatives. In a move that directly benefits mobile operators, DragonWave Inc. (TSX: DWI)(NASDAQ: DRWI), a leading global supplier of high-capacity packet microwave radios, and FiberTower (NASDAQ: FTWR), one of the largest alternative backhaul providers in the United States, have entered into an alliance that was announced today at 4G World in Chicago. This alliance allows DragonWave to bundle FiberTower spectrum with its Avenue product line, while also enabling FiberTower to offer bundled spectrum and equipment solutions.
Designed to meet city-zoning restrictions for street level deployments, the DragonWave Avenue incorporates the industry's smallest antennas to operate seamlessly with FiberTower's area license frequencies and provide unsurpassed microcellular backhaul performance. With Avenue now being marketed with FiberTower's expansive portfolio of 24 GHz and 39 GHz licenses, mobile carriers can deploy six-inch and smaller antenna solutions to provide street-level microcellular backhaul offerings. These bands offer a simple licensing process and are more readily available in markets where frequency congestion is an issue. FiberTower's spectrum licenses extend to over 99% of the United States."
I think of it as the 'worker bees' to the Queen bee. Our spectrum fills the honeycomb. Once things get 'worked out' with interest payment, debtors then add any other possible new business or growth of current partners and we will be able to see the value of the 'honey. =P
Not everyone likes or needs honey, but it's got 'value' to those who do appreciate it. ;-)
Came across the article which I don't remember seeing on this board before. It is nearly a year old so take it for what it is worth.
The PPS!!! Not trying to be a smart @ss.....! I am all about educated gambling but honestly, I don't understand the academics of it... their spectrum! I've looked and looked and would love some confirmation that what they own has CONCRETE value. COMMON or COMMODITY value is what we're witnessing and their struggling with it themselves (obviously) from a "book or paper" stand point. Why the F...- can't somebody execute and make it spit out coins? It should be this difficult! Right?
About midway down this article; a "benefit" to 20-40ghz is highlighted.
Is this an "old dog.....dime a dozen" frequency band? Let's face it...! This is either FTWR's albatross or ace in the hole! It would seem that if the later were true we could get something worked out in a hurry!
Here lies the $64k ?.....
The microcell connection and 24-39ghz spectrum!!!
Is this the cocktail that is going to get us all DRUNK??
I think so........but I don't fully understand the Pro's and Con's!
We need a tech guru's explanation in laymans terms....
Glad you brought this up. I too did research on this spectrum and posted a comment some time ago. I could only match this spectrum with FTWR. This was one of several major concerns with this company. If this spectrum is so valuable, and with explosion in technology, why is it not being sought after?
Let's hope you are right with the microwave connection.
