Regarding recent announce cuts of 800 employees.
I recommend that SVU cuts 1% of workforce per year until the company demonstrates it is solidly on path of performance.
Cuts CAN motivate those remaining to perform or perish.
If you have declining sales, you are losing market share in 9 of the 10 major markets you compete in, why would you eliminate more talent? How about taking back most of the $7M they pay the
CEO who hasn't demonstrated the ability to right the ship?
Nice to see you create a new account to tell us about SVU's problems?
Do you have other yahoo accounts?
" why would you eliminate more talent? "
I see so you personally know every one of those 800 jobs being eliminated? They are all the cream of the crop?
Out of 140,000 employees, there are no poor performers?
Once more the leaders(?) on the top dip into the ranks of those that do the work to solve the problems--sagging retail sales, years of negative same store sales, poor operations, high margins--no strategic plan--just cut, cut, cut. . . There was a time this company cared about their employees and customers, but that time is long gone.
Perhaps it's time for the "thinkers" and "planners" to look in the mirror and see who really needs to be cut?
YOU CAN'T CONTROL YOUR WAY TO PROFITABILITY when you're running a RETAIL company--yet, when the retail folks are all gone and all you're left with are MBA's, bean counters and lawyers making big bucks and very questionable operational decisions--this is what you get.
Funny how when you get so far up the food chain, there's always somebody to blame and no accountability for results.
My heart goes out to the 800 folks [that have lost their jobs] and their families.

As I linked in this thread some of these jobs are administrative. So you probably still have your cashier's job.
"My heart goes out to the 800 folks [that have lost their jobs] and their families."
Feel free to donate money to them.
My heart goes out to the remaining employees. Do good work and stay. Be unproductive or counterproductive and go.
SVU is a company not a charity.
Most companies can cut salary, benefits and bonuses of mgt to help make a company profitable.
Most companies way over pay mgt, including CEO, COO, CFO, etc.
These people need to suffer just like labor and the stock holders.
Why do you think it has nothing to do with this weeks announcement? Take another look at the page the gentlemen provided. It was there. Not strictly IT but it sounded like a good portion were and that is about as detailed as it will get because no company provides that level of detail.
SUPERVALU seems to always lets everyone know way in advance when cuts are planned. It generally causes operational problems in my experience but I suppose it is the ethical thing to do.
cutting the workforce can only work if you eliminate the one person who just doeant have a clue and that the ceo we already have skeleton crews at the store so that service sucks and people rob the store blind because there is never anyone on the sales floor. all customers want is low prices and good service yet we have all these stupid gimicks just keep it simple low prices and good service and people will come its not rocket science
Supposed to be office jobs rather than store level. Where they are at I don't know but store operations shouldn't be impacted.
800 jobs, assume $100K a year in related costs (may be high but probably not far off). Maybe $80 million in annual costs once fully implemented. May need them next year to avoid violating those debt covenants.
I favor cuts where they would be most productive in the long run for SVU be that sales or management or both.
1% reduction in force per year is very small.
Until SVU is on top of the game, the bottom 1% should go.
