The crisis that keeps on giving...

New leak at Japan's crippled nuclear plant?

"Crews working to mitigate the post-tsunami nuclear crisis in Japan might be dealing with a new leak, a Japanese safety official said over the weekend. Elevated levels of the nuclear waste iodine-131 - 6,000 times Japan's legal standards - were recorded Saturday around a water intake at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant, up from 1,100 times the legal standards two days earlier. The discovery comes more than a week after workers stopped a more severe leak of contaminated water - containing radioactive iodine at 7.5 million times the limit - into the Pacific Ocean. The weekend increase could be from a fresh leak or from sediment stirred up while fixing the first leak, officials said."

Oh joy. Just what we wanted to hear....

    • Liberal media scare tatics! Read what Ruff has to say in latest newsletter:

Ruff’s reaction is, well, unruffled. In fact, he’s positively magisterial.

He wrote flatly: “The headlines are driven by liberal media that are anti-nuclear and are designed to frighten people from building nuclear plants. Nuclear plants are the only solution to our energy problems. Apparently, the industry has ignored the scary stuff. China is building 60 nuclear plants as this is written. Obama has approved seven nuclear plants.”

Ruff’s concluded: “Consequently, I still strongly recommend the uranium stocks that are recommended in the Investment Menu. The first uranium stock to recover will be Cameco Corp. /quotes/comstock/13*!ccj/quotes/nls/ccj CCJ +1.50% Don’t ignore the junior uranium-development companies, including Denison Mines Corp. Consolidated issues listed on NYSE Alternext US /quotes/comstock/14*!dnn/quotes/nls/dnn DNN +0.85% and Uranium One Inc. The Toronto Stock Exchange: /quotes/comstock/11t!e:uuu CA:UUU 0.00% .”

In a relatively unusual move, Ruff actually added to his uranium exposure.

“I have added Uranium One Inc The Toronto Stock Exchange and Uranium Resources Inc. /quotes/comstock/15*!urre/quotes/nls/urre URRE +4.15% to the Junior Uranium Development list,” he wrote. “They are more speculative, but will do just fine when the Japanese situation settles down.”

It’s not a particularly subtle analysis. But you have to admit it’s clear.
