Just wondering about your backround. Do you work in the options biz or just a very well informed options player.

I am not nearl as knowledgable as some here but you seem to have the best grasp of options.
      Just curious

Finance education (College) + formal industry experience + years of trading.

I would say dismiss the education and industry experience and give weight only to the trading experience.
I know plenty in the industry who know squat besides buy/hold as in buying and holding on for dear life.

My strategy is to downplay all academia when it comes to trading since the market is heavily manipulated.
However, there is a minimum academia knowledge required to trade more intelligently.

    • westwoodguy,

What does "trading desk" means to you?

Please use Google before embarrassing yourself.
This is also my last reply to you so I don't stoop to your lack of knowledge on the subject.

the mm wants to be market neutral.
the fund has to buy in
the fund writes calls to the mm.
the underwriter sells the block to the fund.
the fund lowers their net purchase price and the mm attains market neutral delta.
      ###############################

You have no clue of what you are talking about. Or do you?

      1. Do you know what a Market Maker is?
In your assumption of the dealing between the MM and the fund, you clearly have know idea of what MMs do.
When you cannot even identify the parties in the transaction, it is time to quit.

      2. The values of the options were not depressed by volume but by severe reduction in volatility plus a little exhaustion in duration, most of which happened yesterday.
In fact, the CALLs gain value today from a slight increase in volatility.

You are confusing yourself and your colleagues noobs with gibberish, and you need to quit.

    • Westwoodguy,

      I appreciate your commentary!
As always I find your postings to be informative and no nonsense.

      Have a great weekend everyone

for every buyer there is a seller (and vice versa)
      ####################

You should always double check yourself when stating the obvious.

When "we" talk of buy or sell, we talk of giving at the bid or taking at the ask.

This important because of the "SPREAD".

If someone eats the spread and buys at the ask, it represents a bullish action.
On the other hand, if a seller sells at the bid, the seller is eating the spread which means he really wants to exit.
      That represents a bearish action.

That trade represents a bullish action because the ask was taken.

Read up on Market Makers/Specialists to understand further these implications.
MMs and specialists always have to take position and can only express their market sentiments through the spreads.

    • Ouch, MSD! I was just taking you at your word regarding the timing of the trade. At the close does not mean after hrs to me. Your spotting it on the sell side was accurate so please accept my apologies. I still think it does matter whether the stock price moves up/down on this size of trade relative to overall stock vol. And as westwood guy points out, it ain't your Aunt Martha making the deal.

    • What impressed me was the low towards the end of the day was higher than yesterdays and the close was higher than yesterdays. I added some before the close and that 500,000 share trade I believe had the same intentions as I did hopefully and backed my assumptions for Monday Impact. IMO. Makes you feel good knowing someone else put 40 million dollars worth at the same place you bought in at. (actually he bought a lil higher :) Good luck guys. Imo.

    • When a stock moves up with a trade, it is a buy and not a sell you noob.

    • Hey ms: even with that, stock closed up. didn't it?
      rocky
