EMC buys when an employee exercises their stock options to maintain its VMW holding % for tax reasons. During qtr end blackouts the exercise amounts are usually lower.
The $550M plan is VMware's, though it is presented as EMC buying. The reason: on paper VMware is a part of EMC, but actually operates independently.
