    • The last date was the 15th to get the dividend. Everyone gets the split no matter what. The split means nothing anyway.

I don't understand why many on the Board seem to think that new buyers are in this for "the short term."

It's investors who don't care a hoot about dividends that tend to be traders.

I saw this with FDG. I bought 2 years ago because of the dividends.

Since Cramer praised it and then changed his mind more traders are getting into it.

      • You are correct. People who bought on the 15th will be holders of record on the 20th and will qualify for the Dec 30 dividend.

That is why on the 16th, the stock dropped more than $1.

      • Dec 20th is the record date for the 1.00 special dividend...

"Old Republic (Barron's, March 14) has been a favorite stock of veteran investor and Barron's Roundtable participant Archie MacAllaster for some 25 years. The Chicago insurer, after increasing its quarterly in May to 17 cents a share from 13 cents, is winding up 2005 with a $1 bonus dividend, which it credited to its "strong long-term results," and a five-for-four stock split. There are 183.5 million common shares currently outstanding.

The cash and the stock will both be distributed on Dec. 30; the record date is Dec. 20. Old Republic has paid dividends without interruption since 1942 and raised them for 24 consecutive years. In addition, splits or stock dividends have now taken place in 23 of the past 39 years."
