    OK... No More Excuses

Lula is not as leftist as you seem to imply. In fact, in his first term, he was often criticized as being too friendly to business. I view him as a political pragmatist rather than a socialist. He is fully aware of the need for a strong economy and healthy companies to create much-needed jobs. He has focused on education reforms that he knows will ultimately benefit the huge poor class in Brasil. You are absolutely correct in what you say about Varig. The new management team seems to be intent on correcting the mistakes of the past. In fact, Brasil has a number of highly competent airline managers. Several years ago, TAP Air Portugal brought in a Brasilian to run the company when it was on the brink of failure. He has been amazingly successful in turning TAP around and has made it into an extremely profitable company. The damage to Varig's reputation, both domestically and internationally, could soon be overcome. We've seen very much the same thing in the U.S. The "new" American, United, USAir, etc., have not yet put Southwest out of business, and I doubt that Varig will substantially harm TAM or even GOL. With their growing economy, I believe there is room for all of them as long as they don't start cutting each others' throats for business. Over expansion could put all of the Brasilian airlines at the same risk of finding themselves in the same condition as what toppled so many U.S. airlines. Also, a flood of super-cheap, cut-rate airlines, such as those in Europe, would hurt everyone (except the passengers.) I guess we'll have to just wait and see what happens. Meanwhile, I'm moderately optomistic about GOL and have a modest position very near the current price.
