TRENTON New Jersey (AP) - New Jersey's Gov. Chris Christie said Thursday he's not afraid of the NRA and their bullying tactics and called the organization's latest web ad referencing President Obama's daughters "awful, reprehensible and cowardly".
Christie said the ad was off-base and belittled the NRA, saying if that's the best that they can do to defend their member's right to own assault weapons they are in the wrong line of work.
"I'm not worried about the president taking away anyones right to hunt or own a sporting rifle or shotgun," Christie said. Never once in four years has the president ever said he was taking anyones right to own a gun, he added. This is just as bizarre as those crazy people saying Obama was born in Kenya and the time has come for a ban on weapons made specifically used to kill people.
Earlier, Christie was asked if he was concerned that his ban on assault weapons in New Jersey would incur the wrath of the powerful gun lobby.
"I'm not worried about anybody from the gun lobby. I'm fine, I'll be OK, I can handle myself."
When asked if armed guards should be put in schools he replied, "I don't think having schools turned into armed camps is something that's going to happen on my watch in this state."
Gov. Christie said assigning Vice President Joe Biden to head up his task force was one of the "smartest and most reasonable thing to do" praising the president and also citing the VP's many years of experience on the Senate Judiciary Committee.
