It may not have anything to do with the political spectrum, certainly not the US one. Cyprus - and Greece - are a different, less developed culture area than northern Europe. Much, even most, of the economy there is under the table. Tax evasion is simply a way of life. With their history, no wonder. Yet if the benefits the people won't pay taxes for were eliminated, they'd take to the streets.
The nearest corresponding behavior here is the corporations lobbying for private profits but socialized expenses and losses. That's a way of life in Washington and the state capitols. We should note, though, that if Washington's Pay-To-Play political system were cleaned up, the billionaires would be unlikely to have a riot.
Note - People in Greece or Cyprus feel that their governments, or rather their politicians, are bought and paid for. That's exactly the system that Republicans advocate and work for here now. The Republicans here changed and divorced Main Street for Wall Street years ago.
