    Mainland visitors surge 16% YoY on 1st day of Golden Week - Macau Tourist Office

    On the first day of the National Day Golden Week, the total number of visitors to Macau amounted to 124,500, down 6% from a year back. Though the overall visitor figure shows a decrease, the number of mainland visitors surged with 102,200 entering Macau in one day, up 16% from a year earlier, data from the Macau Government Tourist Office reveal.

      According to Macau Government Tourist Office, the total number of travelers visiting Macau on 1-2 October dropped 0.47% yearly to 263,500. Mainland tourists rose 14.02% year-on-year to 218,000 over the period.

        I suspect that the reason for this is because last year, the Autumn Festival holiday was actually an adjunct of golden week on the calendar, and that greatly facilitated early golden-week travel for people coming from further away than the mainland. Those people needed extra time to travel from more distant locales, and the Autumn Festival days just ahead of Golden Week gave them that opportunity to arrive earlier in the golden week period.

        This year, Autumn Festival was the weekend ahead of the start of golden week, so I would expect travel from distant locales to be less prevalent on day 1 of golden week. It appears that your days 1-2 figures in your second post would support that.
