I just wanted to say that our local Dave's, in Cedar Falls, Iowa, was more packed tonight than I think I've ever seen it. The parking lot was full, and cars were parked down the street for a couple of blocks. We elbowed our way up to the hostess to get on the list. She told us that the wait would be 45-50 minutes, and that she wouldn't even have a pager for us for about 20 minutes! We put our names on the list and when we realized that we weren't going to be able to get up to the bar for a beer, we went across the street to the mall for 20 minutes.
When we got back, we got our pager and we still had to wait in line to buy a beer. It seemed like there were people in every nook and cranny of the place, but while we waited, one of the waitresses recognized us from previous visits. She played with our son for a minute, and even gave him a plastic fish to entertain him. A bartender told us they had been pretty busy all day, and we overheard two waitresses saying that they had run out of chicken.
Watching and eavesdropping on a few tables, we concluded that a lot of the diners seemed to be newbees at Famous Dave's. There is some kind of event at the Univ. of Northern Iowa this weekend, and it dawned on us again just how great a location Famous Dave's has. If you are from out of town and on campus, you are naturally going to drive right down University Ave. and Famous Dave's is one of the first real sit-down restaurants you'll see. I have to think that the four page full color insert in last Sunday's paper might have had something to do with the crowd, too.
We got seated in the section belonging to the waitress that recognized us, and we had a great time. It seems like the ribs get better every time I try them. My husband was impressed because he picked one up tonight, and the meat really did fall off the bone, just like people talk about. All the food tasted great, despite the huge crowd.
