    WSJ: HotS Overheard

AT&T may soon have space to stretch its deal-making muscles. The telecom giant said Tuesday it had completed a $1.9 billion acquisition of wireless spectrum from Verizon Wireless, a deal announced in January. Along with AT&T's proposed acquisition of prepaid carrier Leap Wireless, the purchase was one of two deals for which it was awaiting regulatory approval.

Some analysts had viewed that as a sign AT&T was too occupied to pursue other acquisitions. Getting one deal done could ease that concern. Also aiding AT&T's chances is the fact top rival Verizon Communications will likely be focused on paying down debt related to its purchase of the rest of Verizon Wireless, and so will be unlikely to bid against it. Among the possible deals some investors think AT&T could consider: The purchase of Vodafone's remaining assets in Europe or a bid for spectrum-rich Dish Network.

Both would be costly. But AT&T has cleared some static from its lines.
