I disagree... You don't get .54 shares of VZ for each VOD share, In fact, you get .54 shares of VOD. I had (50) ADR shares of VOD and I (according to Schwab) would have received the following: (13) shares of VZ, (27) shares of VOD, and $262.50 in cash. Based on todays prices (3/11/14) my position would be worth approx $606 in VZ, $263 in cash, and $1019 in VOD for a total of $1,888. That figure divided by the original (50) ADR shares in VOD I had (pre merger) would be $37.76 per share. I actually sold my (50) VOD a few days before the closing date for $38.12 per share so not only am I better off now, I did not have to go thru the Tax (BS) that people are facing that held on. I like VOD and plan on getting back in at around $32/$33
If you held those whopping 50 shares for any length of time then you will have higher capital gains tax than the qualified dividend on the cost of the ROV headache. Those who were late to the VZ/VOD party were the only ones who made more sense on a tax basis to sell prior to the ROV. Now is it you or your son that held the 50 shares? For some reason I think your 50 shares line isn't the full truth.
Good luck on getting your $33 print. VOD approaching oversold already at 38 RSI. Best hope, you get that gap closing around $36.00 support area on the current downward move. Chart has gotten really messy with large gaps which means a setup for a volatile move up when the time comes.
