    Most likely buyer for Vodafone

Either China Telecom or China Mobile. There's absolutely no doubt that Vodafone is on everyone's radar. I'm expecting something before the next earnings announcement on May 20. Europe is recovering, albeit, gradually and that means earnings will significantly improve. Buyers will want to make their move before earnings announcement which would cause a spike up in the stock price.

    • If T bought VOD it would make it easier for T to move their head quarters to Europe for tax purposes. US companies are buying European companies just for that purpose.

    • why before the next earnings date?

Verizon supplied Vod with ~50% of profits. Everyone expects profit to fall over the next year or two as a result of the "demerger" on the wireless side. Those who are optimistic are basing future earnings on cable and fixed line acquisitions.

      • bb.bill, Dividends from VZW were not included in EPS for VOD. The drop in revenue has been on falling wireless and sms revenue (via Whatsapp etc as well as growing VOIP impacts). FIOS is indeed the place to be going forward for communications but there is an answer you might want to DD AND take note of the key launch dates. Vodafone SmartPass.

Web search "Vodafone launches ‘SmartPass’ mobile wallet service"
"Vodafone Group mCommerce director Christian Wirtz said: “By building our service on the latest GlobalPlatform standard as opposed to a proprietary system, our mobile wallet is open to all third-party service providers, including banks and financial institutions, and we are focused on delivering the broadest service portfolio possible.”

Much of EU play is in coordination with VISA network as you will find in any DD for the wallet service..... Vodafone appears as if it is looking to become the Western Union of the EU, Africa (think M-Pesa) and India as well as its other markets served. Think of what a T/VOD merger with this technology would create keeping in mind a deal would bring T's U.S. market as well as America Movil's Latin market into play. This is a play by VOD I would like to hear/see more about as info/numbers are very limited. A play into global remittance business could be grabbed by T, SFTBY or either China carrier. Still see T as the natural suitor here but VOD's board must waive the 6 month restriction for it to be before earnings OR a third party launching a bid for VOD would allow T to enter the bidding process before six months expire.

        Sentiment: Strong Buy
